Metallics J1204 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a lag shield work in drywall or hollow block, or do I need a different anchor?
No. A lag shield like the J1204 expands against solid base material as the lag screw draws it tight, so it needs concrete, solid brick, or solid block. In drywall or the hollow cell of a block wall there is nothing for the shield to grip and it will spin or pull out. Use a toggle or a hollow-wall anchor there instead.
2) What is the J1204 lag shield made of, and can I use it in a damp location?
It is a zinc-alloy lag shield. Zinc alloy holds up better than plain steel against corrosion in damp interior masonry, which is why it is the common choice for anchoring into block, brick, and concrete in mechanical rooms and basements. For direct exterior exposure or anywhere standing water is likely, a stainless anchor is the safer call.
3) How many anchors come in a jar of Metallics J1204?
Each jar holds 50 shields, packaged in Metallics' jar pack. The lag screws themselves are not part of the pack, so order 1/2 inch lag bolts separately in the length your fixture needs.
4) Do I drill the hole the same diameter as the lag screw with a J1204 shield?
No. The hole is sized to the outside diameter of the shield body, not the 1/2 inch lag screw, and it should be drilled at least as deep as the 2 inch shield so the shield seats flush or slightly below the surface. Drill with a carbide bit in a hammer drill, blow the dust out, then set the shield and run the lag in.
5) What are 1/2 inch lag shields typically used for on an electrical job?
Metallics catalogs the J1204 as electrical fastening stock, and at 1/2 inch it is a heavy-duty anchor: strut and Unistrut runs, large conduit supports and clamps, transformer and panel mounting, and equipment brackets fastened to concrete walls, slabs, or ceilings. For light boxes and small straps a 1/4 or 3/8 shield is usually enough.
6) Can I reuse or remove a J1204 lag shield after it is set?
The lag screw backs out, but the shield stays in the hole. Once a lag shield has expanded it grips the masonry and is not practical to pull. If you have to relocate a bracket, plan on driving the shield below the surface and patching, then setting a new one from the jar of 50.
