1) Is the lag screw included with the J1201 shields, or do I buy those separately?
Shields only. The J1201 is the zinc-aluminum shield that goes into the masonry hole; the 1/4 inch lag screws that expand it are a separate purchase. Order the lag length based on the thickness of what you are fastening plus the 1 inch of embedment the shield uses.
2) Can I use a 1/4 inch lag shield in drywall or hollow block webs?
No. A lag shield like the J1201 needs solid base material, concrete, brick, or solid block, because it works by expanding against the sides of a drilled hole. In drywall or a hollow block cell there is nothing for the shield to grip; use a toggle or a hollow-wall anchor there instead.
3) What material are the Metallics J1201 anchors made of, and can they go in a damp location?
These shields are zinc-aluminum alloy, which is the standard material for lag shields and gives reasonable corrosion resistance in interior masonry and occasional damp conditions. For continuous wet exposure or exterior coastal work, a stainless or heavier-duty mechanical anchor is the better choice.
4) Will a 1/4 x 1 lag shield work through a thick bracket, or do I need a longer shield?
The shield length only sets embedment, so a 1 inch shield gives 1 inch of hold in the masonry regardless of what you are fastening. What changes with a thicker bracket is the lag screw length, not the shield. If you need deeper embedment for a heavier pull-out load, step up to a longer lag shield in the same 1/4 inch diameter.
