Metallics JHW126 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size hole do I drill for the Metallics JHW126 1/2 inch wedge anchor?
Wedge anchors are drilled nominal to the anchor diameter, so the JHW126 at 1/2 x 6 inches goes into a 1/2 inch carbide hole in concrete, drilled deeper than the embedment you need so debris has somewhere to go. Clean the hole, drop the anchor through the fixture, and set it by driving the nut with a hammer, then torque the nut to expand the wedge.
2) Will a 6 inch long 1/2 inch wedge anchor work for thick base plates or standoffs?
That is exactly what the extra length is for. The JHW126 is 6 inches overall, so after embedment in the slab you still have thread projecting for a thick base plate, a shim stack, grout bed, or strut standoff. For thin fixtures like a single clip or a strap, a 6 inch body leaves more projection than you need and a shorter 1/2 inch anchor is the cleaner pick.
3) Can a hammer drive wedge anchor be used in block or brick instead of concrete?
No. A wedge anchor like the JHW126 works by expanding a wedge against solid base material and belongs in poured concrete. In hollow block, brick, or grout-filled CMU it either spins out or splits the unit; use a sleeve anchor or a screw anchor rated for masonry instead.
4) Is the Metallics JHW126 anchor suitable for damp or outdoor concrete?
It is zinc plated carbon steel, which handles interior and normally dry conditions and short outdoor exposure. For wet, coastal, or chemically aggressive locations, zinc plating is not the right finish and a stainless wedge anchor is the correct call.
5) How many anchors come in the Metallics JHW126 package?
Twenty-five anchors, packed in a jar rather than a loose box, which is what makes it practical to keep on a service truck for strut, conduit rack, and equipment base anchoring without the hardware migrating all over the bin.
6) Are these anchors removable once set?
Not really. A wedge anchor is a permanent mechanical anchor, the clip bites the concrete when torqued and the body stays in the hole. You can back the nut off and remove the fixture, but the anchor itself has to be cut flush or driven below the surface and patched. If you need to take the equipment down and remount it later, a threaded insert or drop-in anchor is the better choice.
