Metallics JHW346 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size hole do I drill for the Metallics JHW346 3/4 inch wedge anchor?
Drill 3/4 inch. A wedge anchor is sized by its own diameter, so a 3/4 x 6 inch anchor goes into a 3/4 inch carbide-bit hole drilled deeper than the embedment you want, with the dust blown or vacuumed out before you set it. The 6 inch length is overall anchor length, not embedment depth, so the slab or wall has to be thick enough to take the portion you bury plus the fixture thickness you are clamping.
2) Can I use the JHW346 anchor in block or brick, or is it concrete only?
Wedge anchors like the JHW346 are designed for solid, poured concrete. The expansion clip needs a continuous hole wall to grip, so hollow block, brick, mortar joints, and stone are the wrong base material. For those, use a sleeve anchor or a screw anchor rated for masonry instead.
3) How many anchors come in a jar of Metallics JHW346?
Ten anchors per jar, and the jar is the pack unit for the 3/4 x 6 size. If you are laying out a run of strut, trapeze supports, or equipment bases, count your hole pattern against multiples of 10 before ordering.
4) Is the JHW346 anchor zinc plated, and can I use it outdoors?
The JHW346 is a zinc-plated carbon steel anchor. Zinc plating handles dry interior work and normally damp indoor conditions, but it is not a stainless or hot-dip coating, so for exterior exposure, washdown areas, or anywhere chlorides are present you should step up to a stainless wedge anchor.
5) What does hammer drive mean on this Metallics wedge anchor?
It means the anchor is driven into the drilled hole with a hammer rather than threaded in. The nut and washer are already on the stud, so you tap the whole assembly down through your fixture into the hole, then torque the nut, which draws the cone up into the expansion clip and wedges it against the concrete. No pilot fastener and no separate shell to drop in first.
6) Can wedge anchors like the JHW346 be removed and reused?
No. Once the nut is torqued the expansion clip is permanently set against the concrete. You can back the nut off and remove whatever is bolted down, but the anchor body stays in the hole. If you need a removable connection, use a threaded insert or a drop-in anchor with a machine bolt instead.
