Metallics JNA142 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the JNA142 nail-in anchor in drywall or hollow block?
No. Hammer-set nail drive anchors like the JNA142 need solid base material, concrete, solid masonry or brick, where the pin can expand the body against sound substrate. In drywall, hollow block cells or hollow tile there is nothing to grip and the pin will spin free. Use a hollow-wall or toggle anchor for those.
2) Are nail-in drive anchors removable if I need to take the conduit strap back off?
Treat them as permanent. A driven pin anchor is not meant to be backed out, and removal usually means cutting the pin flush or drilling the anchor out. If the fixture has to come off and go back on, a 1/4 inch sleeve anchor or a Tapcon style screw anchor is the better choice. The JNA142 is for fastenings that stay put, like strut, straps and box mounting.
3) Is a zinc-plated steel anchor OK for outdoor or damp locations?
Zinc plating on steel is a mild corrosion coating suited to dry interior work. For exterior walls, parking structures, pools, coastal sites or anywhere subject to wash-down, step up to a stainless anchor instead. The JNA142 body is steel with zinc plate.
4) Why choose a hammer-set nail anchor over a Tapcon screw for overhead concrete work?
Speed. A drive pin anchor sets with two or three hammer blows, so running a hundred conduit straps overhead goes much faster than driving a hundred screws, and nothing can cam out or snap the head off. The trade-off is that it is a one-way fastener: no adjustment, no removal. Pick a screw anchor when the fixture may come back off, and the JNA142 when the layout is final.
5) What are these 1/4 x 2 nail-in anchors typically used for on an electrical job?
They are an electrical-trade fastener for the high-volume attachments an electrician makes into concrete: one-hole and two-hole conduit straps, strut and channel, box mounting brackets, cable clips and ground clamps. The 2 inch length gives enough embedment to go through a strap or a bracket and still bite into the slab or wall. Jars of 100 suit cart or van stock rather than single-fixture work.
6) Is the JNA142 the same part number as the bulk-box version of this anchor?
JNA142 is the Metallics part number for the 1/4 x 2 zinc-plated nail-in anchor supplied in a 100-count jar. If your spec or last invoice shows JNA142, that is this item, jar packaging included.
