Metallics LCS3440 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 4 inch long anchor work in a 4 inch concrete slab?
No, not safely. The LCS3440 is 4 inches overall, and the fixture thickness plus washer takes up part of that, but the expansion sleeve still needs solid concrete all around it and clearance below the end of the anchor. In a 4 inch slab you should step down to a shorter anchor or use a through bolt detail instead.
2) Can I use a 3/4 inch hex head sleeve anchor to mount strut, panelboards or conduit racks to a concrete wall?
Yes, that is the normal use for the LCS3440. It is a 3/4 x 4 inch hex head anchor carried as electrical fastening hardware, the size commonly used for heavy wall and overhead mounting such as strut channel, enclosures and conduit racking into poured concrete. The hex head lets you set it with a socket and torque wrench rather than a screwdriver.
3) Is the LCS3440 anchor zinc plated or stainless, and can it go outdoors?
It is zinc plated carbon steel, not stainless. Zinc plating handles dry interior and sheltered conditions well, but for direct weather exposure, wet process areas or coastal sites a stainless anchor is the better call. For an indoor mechanical room or parking structure interior, the zinc plated LCS3440 is the usual choice.
4) What drill bit size do I need for a 3/4 inch sleeve anchor like the LCS3440?
A 3/4 inch sleeve anchor is drilled with a 3/4 inch carbide hammer bit; the sleeve body matches the nominal anchor diameter and the hole is drilled deeper than the embedment to clear dust. Blow or vacuum the hole clean before setting, or the sleeve will not seat to full depth and the 4 inch length will stand proud.
5) Is the LCS3440 the same thing as a wedge anchor?
No. The LCS3440 is a large diameter hex head sleeve anchor, which expands along a sleeve that bears against the hole wall over a longer contact area and works in concrete, brick and block. A wedge anchor expands only at the tip and is for solid concrete only. If you are fastening into block or brick, the sleeve type is the one you want.
6) Do I need anything else to install the Metallics LCS3440, or is the nut and washer included?
Sleeve anchors of this style ship complete as an assembly, with the sleeve, expansion cone and hex head already on the bolt, so nothing additional is supplied or needed beyond a 3/4 inch hammer drill bit and a socket to tighten. The box contains 5 anchors.
