Metallics TS347D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What hole size do I drill for a 3/4 inch wedge anchor like the TS347D?
Wedge anchors are drilled at the same nominal diameter as the anchor, so a 3/4 inch TS347D goes into a 3/4 inch carbide hammer-drill hole in the concrete. Drill deeper than your intended embedment so the dust has somewhere to go, drop the anchor through the fixture, and tighten the nut to expand the clip.
2) Can I use the Metallics TS347D wedge anchor outdoors or in a damp location?
The TS347D is zinc-plated steel, which is a light corrosion coating meant for dry interior concrete, not for weather exposure, wash-down areas, or anything in contact with treated lumber. For exterior or wet work, specify a stainless or hot-dip galvanized wedge anchor in the same 3/4 inch diameter instead.
3) Will a 3/4 x 7 wedge anchor work in block or brick, or only poured concrete?
Wedge anchors are a solid-concrete fastener. They work by expanding a clip against the wall of the drilled hole, which needs the uniform compressive strength of poured concrete. Hollow block, brick, or grout-filled cells do not give a reliable set, and a 7 inch anchor will often break through a block face shell. For masonry use a sleeve anchor or a screen tube with adhesive.
4) Does the TS347D wedge anchor come with a nut and washer?
Wedge anchors ship as a complete assembly, nut and washer already on the threaded stud, with the expansion clip at the embedded end. Nothing else is required to make the anchorage itself, though you will need a 3/4 inch carbide bit, a rotary hammer, and a socket or impact wrench to pull the nut up.
5) What is the Metallics TS347D typically used for in electrical work?
It is a concrete anchor used to set heavy electrical gear: transformer and switchgear pads, generator and unistrut frames, large cable tray supports, pole and bollard bases, and equipment racks. The 3/4 inch diameter is the size you reach for when the load or the equipment anchor-bolt pattern calls for a bolt that big.
6) I only need two anchors for one equipment pad. Can I buy fewer than 10?
The TS347D is a boxed quantity of 10, so 10 pieces is the unit. For a four-bolt equipment base that leaves spares, which is worth having on a 3/4 inch anchor, since an anchor that spins in an oversized or soft hole has to be abandoned and reset in a fresh location.
