Metallics TS6812SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size hole do I drill for the Metallics TS6812SS wedge anchor?
The TS6812SS is a 3/4 inch diameter wedge anchor, and wedge anchors are drilled with a carbide bit matching the anchor diameter, so a 3/4 inch hole in the concrete. Drill deeper than the intended embedment so dust and cuttings have somewhere to go, then drive the anchor through the fixture into the hole and tighten the nut to expand the wedge clip.
2) Is the Metallics TS6812SS wedge anchor stainless steel, and can I use it outdoors or in a wet area?
Stainless steel, per the SS designation in the part. That is what makes it the choice for exterior pads, rooftop equipment curbs, parking structures, pool and wash-down areas, and coastal work where a plated carbon steel wedge anchor would rust at the exposed thread and nut. For dry interior slab work a zinc plated wedge anchor of the same 3/4 x 8-1/2 size does the same mechanical job.
3) Can I use a wedge anchor like the TS6812SS in block or brick instead of concrete?
No. Wedge anchors such as the 3/4 x 8-1/2 TS6812SS work by expanding a clip against the wall of a drilled hole and need solid, poured concrete to develop their hold. In hollow block the clip has nothing to bear against, and in brick or the face shell of a CMU the expansion force can crack the unit. For masonry use a sleeve anchor, a screw anchor rated for block, or an adhesive anchor with a screen tube.
4) How many anchors come in a box of Metallics TS6812SS?
Ten anchors per box, packed as a box rather than loose or bulk. Each one ships as a complete assembly with the expansion clip, nut and washer, so a box covers ten holes. For a four-bolt column base plate that is enough for two and a half bases, so order by the number of plates times bolts per plate and round up to whole boxes.
5) Can a wedge anchor be removed or reused once it has been set?
Not reusable. Once the nut on a 3/4 x 8-1/2 wedge anchor is torqued, the clip has expanded permanently against the concrete. To get it out of the way you back off the nut and drive the stud flush or below the surface, then patch; pulling it out normally takes the surrounding concrete with it. Plan the hole locations before setting, and use a fresh anchor for any relocation.
