Metallics JHW38238 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 2-3/8 inch wedge anchor be long enough for my job?
Work it backwards: the 2-3/8 inch length has to cover the thickness of whatever you are fastening, plus the washer and nut, plus the portion embedded in the concrete. With a 3/8 inch anchor that leaves room for a fairly thin fixture, something like a strut channel, conduit clamp, or equipment base plate. If you are fastening through grout, a plate and shim, or anything over about half an inch thick, step up to a longer 3/8 inch wedge anchor instead.
2) Can I use these zinc wedge anchors outdoors or in a wet area?
Zinc plating on the JHW38238 is a dry interior finish. It handles normal indoor conditions fine, but outdoors, in wash-down areas, near pools, or in coastal air it will corrode. For those, use a hot dip galvanized or stainless wedge anchor of the same 3/8 inch diameter.
3) Can wedge anchors like these be used in block or brick, or only concrete?
Wedge anchors are a solid-concrete anchor. They work by a clip expanding against the wall of a drilled hole in poured concrete, so hollow block, brick, and mortar joints do not give them anything to grab and the base material can blow out. For CMU or brick, use a sleeve anchor or a screw anchor rated for masonry rather than the 3/8 inch wedge.
4) What is a hammer drive wedge anchor used for on electrical work?
It is the standard concrete fastener for mounting strut, conduit straps, panel backboards, junction boxes, light pole bases, and equipment feet to slabs, walls, and ceilings. You drill, drop the anchor through the fixture hole, hammer it flush, and tighten the nut to set the wedge. The JHW38238 is Metallics' 3/8 inch size, sold in jars of 50 for repeat fastening on the same job.
5) Do these anchors come with nuts and washers?
Yes. A wedge anchor of this type ships as a complete assembly, the threaded stud with the expansion clip, plus the nut and washer already on the thread, so nothing extra is needed to set the 3/8 inch JHW38238 other than a hammer and a wrench.
