Metallics J6230SS Anchors 5/8 x 3 Hex Nut Sleeve SS (Jar 25)

Sleeve anchors are drilled at the same nominal diameter as the anchor, so a 5/8 inch sleeve anchor takes a 5/8 inch carbide bit. Drill deeper than the embedment you need so debris has somewhere to go, and keep the 3 inch overall length in mind: the portion that is not taken up by your fixture thickness, washer and nut is what is left for embedment.

Sleeve anchors like the Metallics J6230SS are made for masonry base material, concrete, brick and block. The sleeve expands against the hole wall as the hex nut is tightened, which is why they hold in hollow block as well as solid concrete, unlike a wedge anchor that wants solid concrete only.

The J6230SS is stainless, which is what you want for exterior walls, wash-down areas, pool rooms, coastal work, or anywhere a zinc plated anchor would bloom rust and stain the facade. For dry interior electrical work a plated carbon steel sleeve anchor in the same 5/8 x 3 size does the same mechanical job at lower cost.

The 3 inch length on the J6230SS has to cover your fixture, washer and nut plus embedment. For thin material like strut, a mounting foot or a panel flange, that leaves plenty of anchor in the wall. For thick spacers, standoffs or a layer of furring you will run short and should step up to a longer sleeve anchor in the same 5/8 inch diameter.

Hex nut sleeve anchors ship as a complete assembly: the sleeve, the cone, and the hex nut with washer already on the stud. Nothing extra to order. You only need the right carbide bit and a wrench or impact to set them.

That is the usual use for it. The J6230SS is carried as an electrical fastener and a 5/8 x 3 stainless sleeve anchor handles transformer brackets, disconnects, strut runs and equipment stands on concrete or block. The stainless body also avoids a dissimilar-metal problem when you are bolting to stainless or aluminum enclosures outdoors.

Not reliably. A 5/8 inch sleeve anchor such as the J6230SS drills at 5/8 inch, while a 5/8 inch wedge anchor also drills 5/8 inch but grips over a much shorter expansion zone, so a hole that has already been worked by a failed wedge anchor may be oversized or spalled. If you are replacing a pulled anchor, move to fresh base material rather than reusing the hole.
