1) What size hole do I drill for a Metallics SWA5870 wedge anchor?
The SWA5870 is a 5/8 x 7 inch wedge anchor, and wedge anchors use a hole the same nominal diameter as the anchor, so a 5/8 inch carbide bit sized to ANSI tolerances is what you drill. Drill deeper than your intended embedment so dust has somewhere to go, then drive the anchor through the fixture and expand the clip by torquing the nut.
2) Is the SWA5870 anchor approved for cracked concrete?
Yes, it is a cracked concrete rated wedge anchor, which is what inspectors look for when the anchorage is in a tension zone or a seismic application. A standard wedge anchor qualified only for uncracked concrete will not satisfy that condition.
3) Will a 7 inch long wedge anchor work for mounting strut, transformers, or equipment bases to a slab?
The 7 inch length on the SWA5870 gives you a long embedment plus enough stick-out to clear a thick fixture, grout bed, or stacked base plate. Total length has to cover the fixture thickness, the washer and nut, and your required embedment depth. For a thin bracket on a slab, a shorter 5/8 inch wedge anchor is the more economical choice.
4) Can I use a Metallics SWA5870 wedge anchor in hollow block or brick?
No. Wedge anchors rely on expansion against solid concrete and are for poured concrete only. In hollow CMU or brick, use a sleeve anchor or a screen tube with adhesive instead.
5) How many anchors come in a jar of Metallics SWA5870?
