Metallics SWA1270 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Metallics SWA1270 anchor in cracked concrete?
Yes. The SWA1270 is a cracked concrete rated wedge anchor, so it is intended for use in concrete that may crack under load, not just uncracked base material.
2) What diameter hole do I drill for a 1/2 inch wedge anchor like the SWA1270?
A wedge anchor is drilled with a hole the same nominal diameter as the anchor, so the 1/2 inch SWA1270 takes a 1/2 inch carbide bit. The anchor is driven through the fixture into the hole, then the nut is tightened to expand the clip. Hole depth has to exceed the embedment you are using on the 7 inch length.
3) Is a 7 inch wedge anchor too long for my application?
The 7 inch length on the SWA1270 is meant for thick fixtures or deep embedment, things like structural standoffs, heavy equipment bases, or anchoring through a thick plate or sill. If you are only fastening thin strut or a conduit clamp to a slab, a shorter 1/2 inch wedge anchor is the better fit. The length has to cover the fixture thickness plus the nut and washer plus the embedment into the concrete.
4) Do wedge anchors like the SWA1270 work in block or brick?
No. A wedge anchor relies on solid concrete to grip, so the SWA1270 should go into poured concrete only. For hollow block, brick, or mortar joints, use a sleeve anchor or a screw anchor designed for masonry instead.
5) What is included with the Metallics SWA1270 anchors, do I need to buy nuts separately?
Wedge anchors come as an assembly: the threaded stud, expansion clip, and the nut and washer already on the stud. For the SWA1270 you supply only the drill bit and a hammer to set them, plus a wrench to torque the nut.
6) Are these Metallics anchors suitable for electrical equipment mounting?
Yes, the SWA1270 is carried as electrical fastening hardware and is the type used to anchor equipment pads, transformer bases, strut, and panel backing to concrete. Pack of 25 in a jar keeps a service truck stocked for 1/2 inch anchor work.
