Metallics J1505 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size toggle bolt is the Metallics J1505, and what does the 3/16 inch refer to?
The Metallics J1505 is a spring wing toggle bolt sized 3/16 inch (#10) with a 2 inch bolt length. The 3/16 inch / #10 is the machine screw diameter that threads into the spring wing, and the 2 inches is the usable length of that screw, which has to cover your fixture thickness plus the wallboard thickness plus enough thread to let the wings seat behind it.
2) Can I use a 3/16 inch spring wing toggle bolt in a solid concrete or brick wall?
No. A spring wing toggle like the J1505 needs an open cavity behind the wall so the wings can snap open and bear against the back face. In solid concrete, block, or brick there is nothing for the wings to grab and the assembly will not set. For solid masonry you want a sleeve anchor, a wedge anchor, or a plastic/lead screw anchor instead. Use the J1505 on drywall, plaster, and hollow block faces where there is a void behind.
3) How many toggle bolts come in a jar of Metallics J1505?
50 per jar. The J1505 ships as a jar pack of 50 spring wing toggle bolts, which is the count electricians usually want on the van for hanging boxes, straps, and small fixtures off hollow wall rather than a blister of four.
4) Is the toggle bolt reusable if I take the fixture back off?
The screw is, the toggle is not. Back the machine screw out of a J1505 and the spring wings drop loose inside the wall cavity, so you cannot re-hang on the same anchor. If the fixture is likely to come on and off, plan on a fresh toggle each time, which is part of why these are sold 50 to a jar.
5) What size hole do I drill for a 3/16 inch spring wing toggle bolt?
Drill large enough to pass the folded wings, not just the screw. On a 3/16 inch toggle like the J1505, pinch the wings flat against the screw and use that as your gauge for bit selection, then check the fit on a scrap before you drill the finished wall. An undersized hole is the most common reason a toggle will not go in; an oversized one leaves the wings nothing to pull against on the back face.
