Metallics J1546 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size toggle bolt is the Metallics J1546, and how long is the bolt?
The J1546 is a spring wing toggle bolt with a 3/8 inch diameter machine screw thread and a 5 inch bolt length. The 3/8-16 thread callout means 16 threads per inch, so any nut or tapped fitting you pair with it needs to be 3/8-16, not 3/8-24.
2) Will a 3/8 inch spring wing toggle bolt hold in hollow block or drywall?
Spring wing toggle bolts like the J1546 are made for hollow substrates: drywall, hollow concrete block, hollow tile, and hollow metal. You drill a hole large enough for the folded wings to pass through, push them in, and the spring opens them flat against the back face of the material. In solid concrete or solid brick there is no cavity for the wings to open into, so use a sleeve or wedge anchor there instead.
3) Does the 5 inch length on the Metallics J1546 toggle bolt mean it fits thick walls?
The 5 inch dimension is the bolt length, and it has to cover the thickness of whatever you are hanging plus the wall material plus enough stick-through for the wings to swing open. With 5 inches of 3/8-16 bolt you have room for a thick assembly, such as strut, a channel, or a hanger plate on a block wall. If your fixture is thin and the wall is thin, a 5 inch bolt leaves a long tail protruding past the toggle inside the cavity, which matters if there is a stud, duct, or conduit close behind.
4) How many toggle bolts come in a jar of Metallics J1546?
Each jar of J1546 holds 25 spring wing toggle bolts, supplied in a jar pack. That is a practical count for an electrical crew hanging a run of boxes, strut, or fixtures off hollow block, and the jar keeps the bolts and wings together rather than loose in a gang box.
5) Can a spring wing toggle bolt be removed and reused once it is installed?
No. Once the bolt is backed out of a spring wing toggle, the wing assembly drops into the wall cavity and is gone. Plan on a fresh toggle for every reinstall, which is one reason the J1546 is sold 25 to a jar rather than individually.
6) What is the Metallics part number for a 3/8-16 x 5 inch spring wing toggle bolt?
Metallics catalogs it as J1546. That number covers the 3/8-16 thread, 5 inch length spring wing toggle bolt in the 25-count jar, so a distributor or purchasing agent can order against J1546 alone.
