1) Can I use a spring wing toggle bolt like the J1525 in concrete or solid block?
No. A spring wing toggle only works in hollow construction, because the wings have to spring open in a void behind the wall. For poured concrete, solid brick or filled block you want a mechanical expansion anchor or a screw anchor sized to the load instead. Hollow drywall, plaster, hollow block and hollow metal are where the J1525 belongs.
2) Do I need to mount the fixture before installing the toggle, or can I set the anchor first?
The fixture goes on first. On any spring wing toggle the wings are captive on the bolt, so the item being hung has to be threaded onto the bolt before the toggle is pushed through the hole. Pull back on the bolt to seat the wings against the back of the wall while you tighten. If you back the bolt all the way out later, the wing drops into the cavity and is not recoverable, so plan on a fresh toggle for any re-install.
3) Is 6 inches of bolt length too long for a standard drywall ceiling?
The 6 inch length on the J1525 is there for thick assemblies and for stacking material under the head, such as a strut channel, a hanger bracket or a spacer block. On a single layer of drywall you will have several inches of bolt projecting into the cavity, which is harmless as long as the void is deep enough to clear it and let the wings swing. In a shallow furred out cavity, a shorter toggle of the same 1/2 inch 13 thread is the better call.
4) Will a 1/2-13 toggle bolt accept standard nuts and threaded rod couplings?
The bolt is a standard 1/2 inch 13 TPI coarse thread, so it mates with any off the shelf 1/2-13 nut, washer or coupling. That matters when you are picking up strut nuts, hanger hardware or beam clamps that are already specced in 1/2-13 on the drawing.
5) What kind of head and driver does the J1525 toggle bolt use?
Round head with a slotted drive, so a standard flat blade screwdriver turns it. No hex key or Phillips bit needed.
6) How many toggle bolts come in a Metallics J1525 pack?
