Metallics J1522 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 3/8 inch spring wing toggle bolt work in hollow block or drywall?
Spring wing toggle bolts like the J1522 are for hollow base materials only: drywall, plaster, hollow block, and hollow metal. The wings fold flat to pass through a drilled hole, then spring open behind the wall and clamp as you tighten. In solid concrete or solid brick there is no cavity for the wings to open into, so you need a sleeve or wedge anchor instead.
2) Does the J1522 toggle bolt come with the screw, or just the wing?
Each piece is a complete assembly: the spring wing toggle and the matching 3/8 inch slotted pan head bolt. You do not order the screw separately. All 25 units in the jar are the same J1522 size.
3) Is the 6 inch length on the J1522 the bolt length or the grip?
The 6 inch dimension is the bolt (screw) length, and 3/8 inch is the bolt diameter. With a toggle bolt, usable grip is the bolt length minus the wall thickness, so a 6 inch bolt gives you plenty of reach through thick substrates or when you are standing off the wall with a channel, strut, or hanger bracket.
4) What are 3/8 inch toggle bolts used for on electrical jobs?
At 3/8 inch this is the heavy end of the toggle range, used for hanging fixtures, strut, cable tray, large boxes, and equipment off hollow walls and ceilings where the load is too much for a plastic or self-drilling drywall anchor. Metallics lists it as an electrical fastener anchor.
5) Can a spring wing toggle bolt be removed and reused?
No. Once the bolt backs out, the wing assembly drops into the wall cavity and is lost. If you expect to remove and remount the fixture, plan on new toggles each time, or use a threaded anchor that stays captive in the wall. The 25-count jar covers that kind of repeat work.
6) How big a hole do I drill for a 3/8 inch spring wing toggle?
The hole has to clear the folded wings, not the bolt, so it is noticeably larger than the 3/8 inch bolt diameter. Fold the wing flat against the bolt and use that as your gauge before drilling, and check that the cavity behind is deep enough for the wings to swing fully open.
