Ideal Industries B4-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the IDEAL B-CAP B4-1 connector used for?
The B-CAP Model B4 (blue/gray) is a twist-on wire connector for splicing conductors inside a junction or device box. Its draw is the shortened body: the low profile design is made for "old" work and shallow boxes where a taller connector leaves no room to fold the splice back in. The slim fins give you something to grip and leverage when you are turning it on by hand in a cramped box.
2) Will the B-CAP B4 fit in a shallow retrofit box with several splices in it?
That is the case the B4 is built for. The B-CAP's space-saving profile is specifically called out for "old" work and shallow boxes, so stacked splices fold back into the box without fighting the device. On a remodel where you are reusing existing shallow boxes, it is the connector that buys you depth back.
3) Can a Leviton 8319-C or Bryant 8269T be used in place of the IDEAL B4-1 B-CAP wire connector?
No. The IDEAL B4-1 B-CAP is a twist-on wire connector that splices conductors inside a box, sold 100 to a box. The Leviton 8319-C is a hospital grade NEMA 5-20R connector and the Bryant 8269T is a hospital grade NEMA 5-15R connector; both are cord-end receptacle bodies that terminate a flexible cord for plug-in use. They are different classes of device and do not substitute for each other in a splice.
4) For a wet or outdoor connection, is the IDEAL B4-1 the right choice?
The B4-1 B-CAP is a twist-on wire connector whose low profile suits tight or shallow boxes, and it is intended for splices inside an enclosure. For an exposed wet-location cord connection, look instead at the Pass & Seymour Turnlok 27W Series 20A watertight connector rated NEMA 4X/6P, or the Bryant WPC Series weatherproof wiring connector fitting.
5) Is the IDEAL B4-1 a wire nut or a plug-type cord connector?
It is a twist-on wire connector (a wire nut) that splices conductors in a box. It is not a cord-end connector. If you need a female connector for a cord set, that is a different family of product entirely, such as the Leviton Industrial Grade Straight Blade Connector, 3-Wire 2-Pole, 125V 20A, or the Pass & Seymour Turnlok 27W Series 20A watertight connector. Those terminate a flexible cord and mate with a plug; the B4 does not.
6) If the B4 won't take my conductor combination, what else can I look at?
Stay inside the B-CAP line and step to a different color code rather than forcing the B4 on an oversized splice; each size covers its own combination range. For a smaller splice in a tight box, the Leviton ML2-C midget connector is another compact option. Do not substitute a cord connector such as the Bryant WPC Series weatherproof fitting or a Leviton 8319-C hospital grade NEMA 5-20R connector; those serve a completely different purpose.
7) The word connector covers a lot of parts - how does the IDEAL B4-1 differ from a Leviton ML2-C?
The IDEAL B4-1 is a B-CAP twist-on wire connector with slim fins for grip, designed for old work and shallow boxes. The Leviton ML2-C is a midget connector for electrical wiring in the ML2 series, supplied in a pack of 100. The B4-1 makes a twisted splice inside an enclosure, while the ML2-C is a wiring device body; confirm which type the drawing calls for before ordering.
8) We stock industrial grade wiring devices - does the IDEAL B4-1 fall in that same family?
No. The B4-1 is a B-CAP twist-on wire connector packaged 100 per box for making conductor splices. Graded wiring devices are a separate line: the Leviton 15W33 is an industrial grade 3-wire 2-pole straight blade connector rated 125V 20A, and the Leviton 8319-C and Bryant 8269T are hospital grade connector bodies. Order the B4-1 for splicing and the graded devices for cord and plug terminations.
9) How do I identify the right B-CAP size on the job, and what does blue/gray mean?
B-CAP connectors are color coded by size, and the B4 is the blue/gray cap. Crews standardizing a building will order by that color so every electrician on site pulls the same connector for the same splice combination. The part to order is IDEAL B4-1.
10) Is the IDEAL B4-1 sold individually or by the box?
It ships as a box, not loose pieces, which is how it is normally bought for rough-in or MRO stock. There is a single model on the part, B4-1, so there is no color or size to select at order time.
