1) What does a seismic fixture clamp actually do in a suspended ceiling?
It fastens a light fixture or similar load to the acoustical tee (t-bar) of a suspended ceiling grid so the fixture stays attached to the grid under seismic movement instead of dropping out of the opening. The BA-SFC-CFS is Eaton's B-Line clamp for that job, rated at 200 lbs. It attaches the fixture to the grid; it does not replace the seismic bracing or the independent support wires the grid itself needs.
2) How big is the BA-SFC-CFS clamp, and will it fit tight above a troffer?
The clamp measures 4 in by 2 in by 2 in (length/depth, width, height) and weighs .26 lb. That is a small footprint, so it sits within the plenum space above a standard lay-in fixture without fouling the tile. Check your plenum depth against the 2 in height if you are working in a shallow cavity.
