1) Is B32 strut channel OK to run outdoors or in a wet area?
B32-120GLV is pre-galvanized steel, which is the mill-galvanized coating meant for dry indoor and protected locations. For exposed exterior runs, wash-down areas, or corrosive environments, step up to a hot-dip galvanized or stainless channel instead. Cut ends on pre-galvanized stock are bare steel and want a cold-galvanizing touch-up wherever moisture is a factor.
2) Should I use 1-3/8 inch deep B32 channel or full 1-5/8 inch deep strut for my hanger supports?
B32 is the shallow 1.37 inch deep section in 12 gauge steel. It's the one to use for conduit racks, light trapeze hangers, equipment mounting and wall-mounted runs where the load is moderate and you want less protrusion off the wall or ceiling. For long unsupported spans or heavy trapeze work carrying big conduit banks or pipe, go to the full-depth 1-5/8 by 1-5/8 section, which has more beam depth. Both share the same 1.62 inch width, so fittings carry over.
3) Can B32 strut channel be cut down on site?
Yes. The 12 gauge steel section cuts cleanly with a portable bandsaw, chop saw with an abrasive or metal-cutting blade, or a recip saw for quick work. Deburr the cut and hit the raw edge with cold galvanizing compound, since the pre-galvanized coating is applied to the coil before forming and cut ends are left bare.
