B-LINE BFV42-240 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is fiberglass strut the right choice instead of steel channel for a corrosive or wet area?
Fiberglass channel is what you reach for where galvanized or painted steel strut would corrode: wash-down areas, water and wastewater plants, chemical rooms, coastal and roof-top exposure. The BFV42-240 is molded in vinyl polyester resin, which is the corrosion-resistant vinyl ester family rather than a coated metal, so there is no coating to scratch through during install. Steel remains the better pick where you need maximum load per span or where you plan to weld or use the strut as a grounding path.
2) Will standard 1-5/8 inch strut nuts and fittings fit the BFV42-240 channel?
The channel is built on the standard 1.62 inch (1-5/8 inch) strut profile width, so it takes the same channel-nut and fitting geometry as conventional 1-5/8 inch strut. Note the section is 1 inch deep rather than the taller 1-5/8 inch profile, so deep-throat fittings sized for the full-height channel are not the ones to order for this.
3) Can I use fiberglass strut as an equipment grounding path?
No. Fiberglass channel in vinyl polyester resin is non-conductive, so unlike steel strut it cannot serve as a bonding or grounding path and it will not be part of any fault-current return. Run a separate equipment grounding conductor for anything mounted to it.
4) Can I cut B-Line fiberglass strut to length on the jobsite?
Yes, and it is cut with a saw rather than a torch or bandsaw the way steel is. Because the 240 inch channel is a vinyl polyester resin fiberglass section and not a coated metal, cutting it does not expose bare steel that needs cold galvanizing touch-up, which is the usual reason field cuts fail early in wet environments.
5) Does the B-Line BFV42-240 fiberglass strut carry a UL or NEMA listing?
No listing or certification is carried on the BFV42-240 fiberglass channel; it is supplied as a plain structural support channel. If your spec calls for a listed support product, that requirement has to be satisfied by another item in the assembly.
