The BTC500-14 takes a main run of 750 kcmil down to 3/0 and a tap of #10 to #14. If your tap conductor is larger than #10, you need a different B-TAP in the line, which covers #14 through 750 kcmil overall.
2) Can I use this B-TAP tap connector on aluminum conductors, or copper to aluminum?
Both, and in either direction. The BTC500-14 is rated for copper to copper, aluminum to aluminum, copper to aluminum and aluminum to copper, provided the application is non-tension and insulated. Hardened copper teeth pierce the insulation and bite into the conductor.
3) Do I have to strip the insulation or tape over the connection with an insulation piercing tap connector?
No stripping and no taping. The teeth pierce through the conductor insulation, and the housing is self-insulated so tape is not required. A grease-filled end cap seals the conductor end against weather, and grease-filled boots keep the copper teeth from corroding and prevent arcing.
4) How do I know the B-TAP is torqued correctly without a torque wrench?
The breakaway nut does it for you. Drive the nut until it snaps off, which happens once the UL torque requirement is reached. A second nut stays on the connector underneath, so the tap can be backed off and removed later if the circuit changes.
5) Is the BTC500-14 rated for 600V and what temperature?
Rated to 600V and 90 degrees C, which covers standard THHN/THWN-2 insulated building and feeder conductors in that voltage class.
