Baldwin 5023055IMR – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between ordering the Baldwin 5023 knob as a Half Pair versus a Pair?
The 5023 knob with 5016 rose is sold three ways: Half Pair, Pair, and Pair (PINNED). A Half Pair is one knob and one rose, which is what you want when you're mixing trim (knob one side, lever the other) or replacing damaged trim on one face of the door. Pair covers both faces of a single opening. Pair (PINNED) is the version with the knob pinned to the spindle rather than free-turning, which is how dummy and certain fixed applications are built. Count your openings before ordering: a passage or privacy door needs a Pair, a half dummy needs only a Half Pair.
2) What backset does the Baldwin 5023 knob work with?
It works with either of the two standard residential backsets, 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch, which is set by the latch or lock mechanism behind the trim rather than by the knob itself. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore hole to confirm which one you have before you order the matching latch.
3) Is the Baldwin 5023 knob a complete lockset, or do I need to buy more to finish the door?
It's trim only, the knob and its 5016 rose. There's no latch, no lock body, and no strike in the box. You pair it with the interior function you want, passage, privacy, full dummy or half dummy, or use it as the trim on a mortise lock set. Plan on ordering the matching latch or mortise lock separately, in the backset your door is bored for.
4) Can I put a Baldwin 5023 knob on one side and a lever on the other?
Yes. Baldwin's Estate Series trim is built for that, knobs and levers can be mixed on the same opening and combined with the rose you want. Order the 5023 as a Half Pair for the knob side and a matching half pair lever for the other. Keep the finish code the same across both halves so the two faces match.
5) Is the Baldwin 5023 knob suitable for a commercial building or an apartment turn?
It's a residential-duty product. For a homeowner-facing remodel, a single-family rental, or upper-end multi-family interior doors it's the right class of trim. For a commercial opening where you need a graded, code-rated lockset, this isn't that product, go to a Grade 1 or Grade 2 cylindrical or mortise lock instead.
6) What finishes does the Baldwin 5023 knob come in, and will it match my other Baldwin trim?
Fourteen finishes: 003 Polished Brass, 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 033 Vintage Brass, 044 Satin Brass, 050 Satin Brass and Black, 055 Polished Nickel, 056 Satin Nickel, 060 Satin Brass and Brown, 076 Graphite Nickel, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 112 Venetian Bronze, 190 Satin Black, 260 Polished Chrome, and 402 Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze. Those are Baldwin's standard finish codes, so if your existing trim carries the same number the color will match across the house. Note that 031 Non-Lacquered Brass and 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze are living finishes that darken and patina with use, they will not stay identical to a piece installed years earlier.
7) I need a dummy knob for a closet door that doesn't latch. Which version of the 5023 do I order?
For a closet or pantry door with no latch, you want a dummy configuration. A half dummy is a single knob on one face, so order the Half Pair. A full dummy puts a knob on both faces, order the Pair. The pinned version is the one to look at when you want the knob fixed rather than free-spinning. The 5023 is offered as part of complete half dummy and full dummy sets as well as passage and privacy.
8) What is the Baldwin 5023 knob made of?
Solid forged brass, in a round profile. Forged brass has more mass than a cast or tubular knob, so it holds up to repeated use and carries plated and PVD finishes well. The 076 Graphite Nickel option is a satin PVD finish over that brass, combining black and satin nickel tones into a dark grey.
9) Is the 5016 rose round, and will it cover the marks from my old rose?
The 5016 is the round rose that ships with the 5023 knob, matching the knob's round profile. Whether it covers an existing footprint depends on the diameter of what's coming off, measure the old rose and the ring of wear or paint shadow on the door face before you commit. For a bored door, the standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore is what the trim mounts over.
