Baldwin 8285102 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Baldwin 8285 Soho deadbolt fit my existing door prep, or do I need to re-drill?
The 8285 Soho ships with an adjustable latch that covers both standard backsets, 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch, so it drops into either of the two preps found on residential doors without redrilling the cross-bore. Door thickness is where you need to look twice: the standard deadbolt is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. If your door is 2 inches or 2-1/4 inches thick, a thick door kit is required.
2) Does the Baldwin 8285 Soho deadbolt need to be handed, or does it work on a left and right hand door?
No handing to specify. The Soho deadbolt is reversible, so the same part works on an inswing or outswing door regardless of which side the hinges are on. That is one less thing to get wrong on a multi-unit order where the doors are not all swung the same way.
3) What is the difference between the single cylinder Baldwin 8285 Soho and the double cylinder version?
Single cylinder means key outside, thumbturn inside. That is the 8285. The Soho is also made in a double cylinder function, which takes a key on both sides and has no interior turn. Double cylinder is what people reach for when there is glass next to the door and they do not want an arm reaching through to the turn, but many local codes restrict keyed-both-sides deadbolts on a required egress door. For a standard entry door, single cylinder is the normal choice.
4) Can I key the Baldwin 8285 Soho deadbolt to match my other Baldwin locks?
The Soho deadbolt uses Baldwin's C keyway with a 5-pin cylinder, which is the standard Baldwin residential keyway. Any other Baldwin lock on the same C keyway can be keyed alike with it by a locksmith. Two keys come in the box. If the rest of your doors are on a Kwikset or Schlage keyway, they will not key alike to this without a cylinder change.
5) I have a 2 inch thick solid entry door. Can I still use the Baldwin Soho deadbolt?
Yes, but not as it ships. The standard 8285 covers a 1-3/4 inch door. For a 2 inch or 2-1/4 inch door you add Baldwin's thick door kit, which supplies the longer tailpiece and screws needed to reach through the extra material. Order it at the same time; a standard deadbolt will not pull up tight on a 2 inch door without it.
6) Is the Baldwin 8285 Soho deadbolt heavy enough for an apartment building entry door?
It is built as a residential deadbolt, not a commercial one. The case is heavy gauge steel with solid forged brass internal parts and a solid brass bolt, so it holds up well on a unit entry door or a single-family front door. For a high-traffic common-area or commercial opening where a graded lock is specified, this is not the part to standardize on.
7) What finishes does the Baldwin Soho 8285 deadbolt come in, and which ones will hold up outside?
Fourteen finishes: 003 Lifetime Polished Brass, 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 033 Vintage Brass, 044 Lifetime Satin Brass, 050 Satin Brass and Black, 055 Lifetime Polished Nickel, 056 Lifetime Satin Nickel, 060 Satin Brass and Brown, 076 Lifetime Graphite Nickel, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 112 Venetian Bronze, 190 Satin Black, 260 Polished Chrome, and 402 Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze. The Lifetime finishes are the ones to specify on a weather-exposed front door. 031 Non-Lacquered Brass is a living finish and will patina on purpose, which is the point of it, not a defect.
8) Does the Baldwin 8285 Soho deadbolt come with a knob or lever, or do I order that separately?
Deadbolt only. The 8285 is a standalone auxiliary lock that mounts in the upper bore, so you still need a knob, lever, or handleset in the lower bore to latch the door. Baldwin's Estate Series has matching trim in the same finish codes, so order the knob or handleset alongside it if you want the two to match on the door.
9) Is the Baldwin Soho deadbolt an electronic or keypad lock?
It is a keyed mechanical deadbolt, not electronic. Key on the outside, thumbturn on the inside, no batteries, no keypad, no touchscreen. If you are after keyless entry, this is not the model.
