Baldwin 8031112KD12 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Baldwin Estate 8031 cylinder work in a Baldwin entry handleset or deadbolt?
The 8031 is a Baldwin Estate Series replacement cylinder for non-egress handlesets and deadbolts, meaning locks with no interior thumbturn or lever release on the same side. It is cut to Baldwin's C keyway with a 5 pin plug, so it drops into Baldwin Estate hardware already keyed to C. If the lock you are rekeying is an egress function (thumbturn inside), this is not the cylinder for that side.
2) Can I get the 8031 cylinder keyed alike with my other Baldwin locks?
Yes, keying is a choice at order time: keyed different or keyed alike. Keyed alike puts every 8031 you buy on the same key, which is what you want when the front door handleset and the deadbolt (or a second entry) should share one key. Because it is a C keyway 5 pin plug, it matches other Baldwin hardware on the same keyway, so a locksmith can also pin it to an existing C key bitting.
3) What size hole does the Baldwin 8031 cylinder need, and how far does it stick out of the door?
Two inches in diameter with a 7/10 inch projection off the face of the plate. That projection is what you check against a decorative escutcheon or a storm door clearance; the 2 inch diameter is the trim ring face, not a bored hole size, so it covers the cylinder opening in Estate trim it was built for.
4) What finishes does the Baldwin Estate 8031 cylinder come in, and will it match my existing handleset?
Four finishes: 003 Polished Brass PVD, 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 056 Lifetime PVD Satin Nickel, and 112 Venetian Bronze. Order the same finish code as the handleset or deadbolt you are servicing. Note that 031 Non-Lacquered Brass is living finish brass, it darkens and patinas over time, so a new 031 cylinder will start brighter than the aged trim around it and catch up on its own. The PVD finishes (003 and 056) are the ones that stay put.
5) Is the Baldwin 8031 cylinder rated for a commercial door or apartment building entry?
Baldwin lists the Estate 8031 as residential hardware. For single family homes, condo unit doors, and light residential entries it is the correct part. For a commercial opening or a multi-family entry under a master key system, spec a commercial cylinder in the keyway your building already runs rather than this one.
6) What is a non-egress cylinder and how is it different from the one on the inside of my deadbolt?
Non-egress means the side of the lock that has no free interior release. A single cylinder deadbolt has a key outside and a thumbturn inside; the key side is the non-egress side, and that is where the 8031 goes. On a double cylinder deadbolt both sides take a key, so both are keyed. If what you are replacing is a thumbturn, you need a turn piece and not this cylinder.
7) What is the Baldwin 8031 cylinder made of?
Steel. That is the housing material on an exterior-facing key cylinder, which is the part that takes weather and wrench attack, so it matters more here than on interior trim.
8) Is a 5 pin C keyway cylinder enough security for a front entry door?
The 8031 is a 5 pin plug on Baldwin's C keyway in a steel housing, which is standard residential entry security and keys straight into Baldwin Estate hardware. If you need key control, a restricted keyway, or a bump and pick resistant plug for a rental you cannot let get copied, a 5 pin C keyway is not that; you would be looking at a high security cylinder in a proprietary keyway instead, and that changes the key on every door it goes on.
