Baldwin 0322-190 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Baldwin Reserve 322 surface bolt a commercial-rated door bolt?
No. The 322 is a residential product, and Baldwin's Reserve line is finish-driven decorative hardware for homes, high-end interiors, and French or double doors. For a commercial opening under a life safety or egress spec you want a Grade 1 flush bolt or a manual bolt carrying an ANSI/BHMA grade instead. Where the 322 does fit commercially is unrated interior work: office suite double doors, hospitality millwork doors, and anywhere the finish matters more than a grade.
2) Do I need to buy a strike separately for the Baldwin 322 surface bolt?
No. Both strikes come in the box, universal and mortise, along with the screws. The universal strike surface-mounts, which is the quicker install and the one to use when you're shooting the bolt into a threshold or a stop. The mortise strike gets let into the jamb or sill for a flush finish. You pick one at install; nothing else has to be ordered to complete the job.
3) Are the mounting screws visible once the Baldwin 322 bolt is installed?
No, and that's the point of the design. The bolt rides on a fully concealed guide, so no fasteners show on the face once it's mounted. On a stained or painted door where the bolt is at eye level, that matters. It's the difference between this and a plain utility barrel bolt with exposed screw heads down each side.
4) What finishes does the Baldwin 322 surface bolt come in, and will it match my other Baldwin door hardware?
Nine finishes: 003 Polished Brass PVD, 044 Satin Brass PVD, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 112 Venetian Bronze, 140 Polished Nickel, 150 Satin Nickel, 151 Antique Nickel, 190 Satin Black, and 260 Polished Chrome. Those are Baldwin's standard finish codes, so if your levers, hinges, or handlesets are Baldwin, order the bolt in the same numeric code and it lines up. The PVD finishes (003 and 044) are the ones that resist tarnishing, which is what you want on an exterior-facing French door.
5) Do I need a top and bottom bolt on a double door, or is one Baldwin 322 enough?
One 322 secures the leaf at a single point. Standard practice on a pair of doors is two bolts on the inactive leaf, one into the head and one into the sill, so the leaf can't be pushed or pried at either end. A single bolt at the head only is common on light interior French doors where the bolt is really just holding the leaf still for the active door to latch into. Order two of the same finish code if you're doing both ends.
6) Is a Baldwin 322 surface bolt the same thing as a flush bolt?
No, and they install completely differently. The 322 is a surface bolt: it screws onto the face of the door with no routing, and you can see it. A flush bolt is mortised into the edge of the door so nothing shows on the face. Choose the surface bolt when you're retrofitting an existing door and don't want to rout the edge, or when the finish is part of the look. Choose a flush bolt when the hardware needs to disappear or when a commercial opening spec calls for one.
7) What is BHMA designation L04151 on a Baldwin surface bolt?
L04151 is the BHMA product designation carried by the Baldwin 322. Designation codes like this identify what type of hardware the item is within the BHMA numbering system, which is how a spec writer or an architect calls out a bolt on a hardware schedule. If your door schedule lists an L04151 auxiliary bolt, the 322 is what answers it.
