Baldwin FDCURTRR055 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a full dummy lever and does the Baldwin Reserve Curve dummy lever actually latch the door?
No latch, no lock, no moving mechanism. The Reserve Curve full dummy leverset is a fixed pull: the lever is rigid and the set mounts on the door face purely to match the look of the working levers elsewhere. Use it on a closet door held shut by a magnetic or ball catch, on the inactive leaf of a French pair, or on a bi-fold. If you need the door to stay shut on its own, you need a passage set instead.
2) Does a Baldwin full dummy lever need a 2-1/8 inch bore hole in the door?
It mounts into the standard 2-1/8 inch cylindrical prep, which is what makes it useful on a retrofit: you can swap a working passage or privacy lever for the dummy in an existing door with no patching, and it will sit the same way on the face. On a fresh slab with no holes you don't have to bore the 2-1/8 inch cross bore at all, but the prep is there if the door already has it. The edge bore is 1 inch.
3) Is a Baldwin Curve dummy lever handed, and do I need to say left or right when I order?
Handing matters on a dummy lever because the lever points one way and cannot be flipped in the field the way a working lever's latch can. Each set is built to a hand. There is also an optional split levers handing note on the order, which is how you specify a mismatched pair, for example when two dummy levers on a French pair need to point in opposite directions.
4) I ordered a dummy lever but the closet door swings open on its own. What should I have bought?
A passage set. The dummy has no latch at all, so nothing holds the leaf. Swap to a passage function lever such as the Bravura Atlanta, Orlando, or Tampa round or square trim passage leversets (Grade 2), the Callan Asheville Grade 3 passage lever, or the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage set, which fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Keep the dummy only where a catch or a magnet does the holding.
5) I need a dummy lever for a commercial corridor door, not a house. What should I use instead?
The Baldwin Reserve Curve is a residential leverset. For a commercial opening, the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed dummy lever, and the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty version of the same single dummy trim. Accentra's 455LN Augusta, in the 5400 Series, is another Grade 1 single dummy cylindrical lever. All three are single dummy trim - one lever on one face - where the Baldwin is a full dummy set.
6) What is the difference between a full dummy leverset and a single dummy trim?
A full dummy set like the Baldwin Reserve Curve dresses both faces of the door, matching the look of an active passage, privacy or entry door without any lock or latch, within the standard 2.125 inch door preparation. Single dummy trim, such as the BEST 9K Series 1DT or the BEST 7KC Series 1DT, is one lever for one face - the usual choice for a closet or pantry door where only the pull side is seen. The Accentra 455LN Augusta is likewise a single dummy lever.
7) The door actually needs to latch. What lever should I order instead of a dummy?
A dummy has no latch at all, so for a door that has to stay closed on its own you need a passage lever. In the same residential register, the Bravura Atlanta, Orlando and Tampa passage leversets are all Grade 2 - Atlanta and Orlando on round trim, Tampa on square trim, which maps to the round and square rose shapes offered on the Curve. Bravura's Miramar passage leverset with round trim is also Grade 2 and comes in US4 Satin Brass. Callan's Asheville passage leverset is Grade 3 in satin nickel.
8) What rose shapes and finishes does the Baldwin Reserve Curve traditional dummy lever come in?
Three traditional rose shapes, each available in all eight finishes: Traditional Arch (TAR), Traditional Round (TRR), and Traditional Square (TSR). The finishes are 003 Polished Brass PVD, 044 Satin Brass PVD, 055 Polished Nickel PVD, 112 Venetian Bronze, 150 Satin Nickel, 152 Matte Antique Nickel, 190 Satin Black, and 260 Polished Chrome. The PVD finishes hold up better to handling and cleaning than a plain lacquered brass, which is worth knowing on a lever that gets grabbed daily.
9) Can I order a dummy lever with a different rose or finish on each side of the door?
Yes. Split rose and split finish are both order options on the Reserve Curve dummy set, so you can run one finish on the hallway side and another on the room side, or a round rose on one face and a square on the other. Property managers matching a corridor scheme to a differently finished suite interior use this rather than buying two sets. Put the two values in the split fields when you order.
10) Will this Baldwin dummy lever match the other Reserve levers on my other doors?
It is part of Baldwin's Reserve Series and carries the Curve lever with a traditional rose, so it is the deliberate blank-off mate to the active passage, privacy, and entry Reserve sets in the same lever and rose combination. Order the same finish code and the same rose shape as the working doors and the closet or inactive leaf reads identically from the hallway. It is a residential-duty set, so it belongs on apartment and house interiors rather than a commercial corridor.
11) Do I get one lever or a pair with a full dummy leverset?
A full dummy set is trim for one face of the door, built to a hand. For a French pair where both leaves need a fixed lever, you are ordering two. If you specifically want a decorative dummy sold as a pair, the Emtek Classic Brass Cortina lever dummy and the Emtek Arts and Crafts and Hammered lever dummies all ship as pairs. Bentley from Callan is another single dummy lever option, Grade 2.
12) Can a Baldwin full dummy lever be keyed or keyed alike with the rest of the house?
No. There is no cylinder in it, and it is non-keyed by design, so it cannot be added to a keyway or a master key system. For a keyed opening in the same Reserve look you want an entry function set. If the door is a keyed interior opening and appearance is secondary, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever uses a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
13) Is there a dummy lever that costs less to standardize on across a lot of closet doors?
The Callan Bentley dummy lever is a Grade 2 dummy and is a simpler fit where the opening only needs a lever to grab. The BEST 7KC Series 1DT single dummy trim is Grade 2 medium duty. Both are dummy function like the Baldwin Reserve Curve, but the Curve is the Reserve Series residential design with a choice of traditional arch, round or square rose, which the Bentley and 7KC do not offer.
14) Will a Falcon or Corbin Russwin passage lever work as a dummy on a door with no latch prep?
No. The Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 passage lock, the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 cylindrical passage lever, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 passage lock in the CL3100 Series - all three are latching locks that need a full bore and edge prep. A full dummy like the Baldwin Reserve Curve mounts without a latch and suits a door already prepped to the standard 2.125 inch bore with no latch running.
15) What should I use if the same set of doors needs one leaf to lock and the other to be a matching dummy?
Pair the Baldwin Reserve Curve full dummy with a keyed lever on the active leaf. Among keyed options, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial entry lever handling 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dexter C1000 entry/office is a Grade 1 keyed clutching lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Curve itself is non-keyed, so it carries the appearance of the active door without the function.
