1) Can I use the J972U bare copper lug on aluminum cable?
No. The J972U is a copper terminal, intended for copper conductors. Aluminum feeders need a lug rated AL9CU or aluminum-bodied and the matching inhibitor compound, otherwise you get galvanic corrosion at the joint.
2) Why would I use a 90 degree ring terminal instead of a straight lug?
The 90 degree bend in the J972U turns the conductor out of the plane of the pad, so the cable leaves the stud sideways rather than straight on. That is what you want in a tight panel, breaker enclosure, or battery box where a straight lug would force a hard bend in a 1/0 or 2/0 cable right at the barrel. If you have room to run the cable in line with the stud, a straight tube lug is the simpler choice.
3) Is the Sta-Kon J972U insulated, and does it need anything over it?
It is non-insulated, bare copper with no sleeve on the barrel. For anything that needs to be covered after crimping, you add heat shrink or tape yourself. The bare barrel is also what lets you inspect the crimp and use it where an insulating sleeve would not survive the ambient heat.
4) Do I need a crimper for the Sta-Kon J972U, or can I solder it?
It is a tube-barrel compression lug for 1/0 to 2/0 copper, so it goes on with a hydraulic or heavy mechanical crimper using the die that matches the conductor size. Pliers or a hand tool meant for small insulated terminals will not make a code-acceptable crimp at this size.
