1) What voltage does the BEA MS41 touchless switch need, and will it run off my existing door operator power supply?
The MS41 runs on 12 to 24 VAC or VDC, or 5 VDC, and draws under 2.8 W. That range covers the accessory power most low energy operators and access control panels put out, so in most cases you can pull it off the operator rather than adding a supply. Check the operator's auxiliary output current before you commit to it.
2) Can the BEA MS41 actuator switch my door operator directly, or do I need a relay module?
It has its own output: a 1-Form C solid state relay rated 1 A at 30 VAC/VDC maximum. That is a dry contact you wire straight into the operator's activation input, so no separate relay module is needed for a normal low energy operator. It will not switch a load above 1 A or above 30 volts, so anything larger, like a mag lock circuit drawing more than that, needs an interposing relay.
3) Can a touchless actuator be mounted outside, or does it have to be indoors?
The MS41 is rated NEMA 4 / IP65 and runs from -22 deg F to 158 deg F, so exterior mounting is within spec, including washdown areas where the plate gets sprayed. The stainless faceplate with rounded corners is what makes it suitable for surgical, clean room and pharmaceutical spaces where the wall gets wiped down. The center section is ABS.
4) How close do you have to get to a BEA MS41 for it to activate the door?
Sensing range is adjustable from 2 in out to 24 in. Set it short, around 2 to 4 inches, where you have foot traffic passing the plate and do not want nuisance activations. Open it up toward 24 inches in a corridor where staff arrive with a cart or a gurney and cannot present a hand at all. It reads moving hands, carts and wheelchairs, so it will trip on the cart itself at the wider settings.
5) How long does the BEA MS41 hold the door open, and can I set it for ADA traffic?
Relay hold time adjusts from 1 second to 30 seconds. Longer settings are there so you can hold the opening for someone in a wheelchair or pushing equipment through, and the adjustable hold is what lets the installer bring the opening into line with ANSI activation timing requirements for the application.
6) What is the difference between a microwave touchless actuator and a capacitive or infrared one?
The MS41 uses microwave Doppler radar, which detects motion rather than proximity of a hand held still. That means it reads a cart or a wheelchair moving toward it, not just a hand, and it transmits through the plate face reliably indoors and out. The trade off is that motion is what triggers it, so a hand parked motionless in front of the plate is not the way to activate it, and range wants trimming where people walk past the plate rather than at it. Detection can be set to bidirectional motion, toggle, or timed mode.
7) Do I have to order the wheelchair symbol on a BEA MS41, or can I get a blank plate?
Three faceplate graphics are offered on every model: the accessibility (wheelchair) logo, a hand logo, and plain with no marking. The plain plate is the one to order where the opening is not an accessible entrance and you do not want to imply it is. All three are available on the single gang 10MS51-S, the double gang 10MS51-D and the 6 inch round 10MS51-R.
8) Is the BEA MS41 hardwired or battery powered?
Hardwired. The MS41 takes 12 to 24 VAC/VDC or 5 VDC over its wire harness. If there is no power at the push plate location and you cannot get a wire to it, the wired MS41 is the wrong choice for that opening; BEA's battery powered wireless actuator with a built in 900 MHz transmitter is the version made for that situation.
9) Can I tell from across the room whether the touchless plate saw my hand?
The illuminated ring gives you the state: blue on standby, green on activation. There is also audible feedback, switchable between silent mode and signal mode. Silent is what you want outside patient rooms or in a surgical suite; signal mode is worth having in a noisy corridor where the ring alone gets missed.
10) How much wire do I get with a BEA MS41, and do I need a junction box nearby?
A 12 in wire harness comes attached. That is enough to land in the box the plate sits on, not enough to reach a remote junction, so plan the pull to terminate right behind the plate or splice within reach. Kill power before wiring and follow the manufacturer wiring diagram for the relay terminals.
