1) Why use a bell hanger bit instead of a standard twist or auger bit?
Bell hanger bits have a hole through the shank near the tip, so once you break through you can thread your fish wire or cable through the bit and pull it back with the bit as you withdraw it. That is the whole point of the BHD4 for an installer running wire through walls and plates. A standard twist or auger bit gives you the hole only, and you then have to fish the wire separately.
2) Will a 1/2 inch bell hanger bit leave enough room to pull low voltage or small conductors through a stud?
A 1/2 inch hole, which is what the BHD4 cuts, is the usual size electricians use for pulling alarm, telephone, coax, and small cable runs through framing. For larger conduit or multiple NM cables you want a bigger diameter bit, not this one.
3) Is the 12 inch BHD4 long enough to drill through a double top plate?
At 12 inches overall the BHD4 has working length for typical plate and stud drilling from an attic or crawl space. Remember that overall length includes the shank held in the chuck, so your usable depth is less than the full 12 inches. For deeper reaches, step up to a longer bell hanger bit or add a bit extension.
