The BHD15 cuts a 3/16 inch diameter hole. That is the common pilot size for running low-voltage wire, bell wire, or fish lines through wood framing and sill plates.

The BHD15 has an 18 inch overall length, so usable drilling depth is less than that once the shank is in the chuck. It is long enough to pass through a double top plate, a stud bay, or a sill plate and rim joist in one pass, which is why installers reach for a bell hanger bit instead of a standard twist drill.

A bell hanger bit has a hole through the shank near the tip so you can thread wire or a pull string straight through the bit and draw it back out of the hole you just drilled. Drilling and fishing happen in one motion. A standard 18 inch twist drill only makes the hole; you still need a fish tape afterward. The BHD15 is the 3/16 inch, 18 inch version of that tool.

A 3/16 inch hole suits a single small-gauge run, bell wire, thermostat wire, or a pull string. For bundled runs, Cat6, or coax you want a larger diameter bell hanger bit rather than the BHD15.
