BEST 45HCAAT626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the BEST 45H office function mortise lock come with a core, or do I need to order one separately?
The 45H lock body ships prepped for a small format interchangeable core but without the core. It is a single cylinder keyed lock, so you need one SFIC core in your keyway and keying to make it operational. If you need Grade 1 Security rather than the Grade 2 Security the lock carries as standard, BEST calls for a drill resistant core (1CD, 1CDP, 1CDF or 1CDX) with escutcheon trims, or the 1EK7K4 high security cylinder with sectional trims.
2) Is the lever trim included with the BEST 45HCA office function mortise lock?
No. This is the mortise lock body only. Levers or knobs, roses or escutcheons, and the core are all separate orders. Budget for trim, an SFIC core, and a strike package when you spec it.
3) What does office function actually do on a BEST 45H mortise lock?
Office function (the AT function in the 45H line) is an entrance/office lock: the outside lever is locked or unlocked by key, and the inside lever always retracts the latch for free egress. It also carries a deadbolt with a 1 inch throw that the inside thumbturn can project. Practical use is a tenant suite or staff office where someone wants to leave the door unlocked during business hours and secure it by key at the end of the day.
4) Do I have to specify handing when I order the BEST 45H mortise lock body?
Handing is a required selection at order (RH, LH, RHRB or LHRB), but the lock itself is field reversible. The stainless latchbolt rotates 180 degrees without opening the case, and a four position hub toggle sets the configuration, so a wrong call on the order does not scrap the lock. The auxiliary deadlatch is non-handed.
5) Will the BEST 45H mortise lock work on a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
The standard configuration is built for 1-3/4 inch doors, which covers most commercial openings. BEST does offer a thick door configuration up to 5 inches, but the thickness has to be called out at the time of order, not adjusted later in the field.
6) Is the BEST 45H mortise lock Grade 1, and does it meet ADA lever operation requirements?
The 45H Series is certified to ANSI A156.13, Series 1000, Grade 1 for Operation and Strength, with a Grade 2 Security rating. BEST states the design and operation meet the intent of ANSI A117.1 section 404.2.6, the accessible door hardware operation clause. If your spec demands Grade 1 Security as well, the 47H Series carries Grade 1 for Operational, Strength and Security.
7) Which BEST 45H finish should I use in a hospital or clinic?
For healthcare, specify 626AM (satin chrome) or 630AM (satin stainless) with the UltraShield antimicrobial coating, which inhibits growth of bacteria and other microbes on the hardware surface. BEST also points it at elderly care, education, transportation, food service and hospitality. If you are matching existing doors and antimicrobial is not a requirement, plain 626 and 630 are the standard commercial choices.
8) I need to match dark bronze and oil rubbed doors already in the building. What BEST 45H finishes cover that?
Fifteen finishes are offered, and two are dark. 690 statuary dark bronze stays a dark brown appearance over time, while 613 oxidized satin bronze is oil rubbed and is meant to wear to an antique look, so it will not stay uniform across doors installed at different dates. If you want the fleet to look the same in five years, 690 is the more predictable match. Satin bronze 612 and bright bronze 611 round out the bronze range.
9) What stops someone from pulling the cylinder off a BEST 45H mortise lock?
Two things. Solid machined cylinder rings with a wavy washer resist wrenching, and a cylinder security screw blocks removal of the cylinder unless the interchangeable core is pulled first. The armored front wraps both the latch and the deadbolt for lateral strength, and security head screws can be added as an order option if the opening is exposed.
10) Is a mortise lock like the BEST 45H worth it over a cylindrical lock on a high traffic commercial door?
On a door taking constant use, a mortise body gives you a deadbolt and a latch in one case, which a cylindrical lockset does not. The 45H uses 0.095 inch cold rolled steel for the case, cover and armored front with zinc dichromate plating, a solid one-piece stainless anti-friction latch with 50 percent more contact with the strike, and a roller bearing hub with a lever return spring in the trim to fight lever droop. The tradeoff is the door has to be mortised, which is a larger prep than boring for a cylindrical lock.
11) Is the BEST 45H mortise lock an electrified or access control lock?
No. The 45H office function lock body is purely mechanical and key operated. If the opening needs card access, remote release, or monitoring, this is not the part, and a mechanical lock body is not retrofittable to electrified operation.
