Metallics HSSBG2564E – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 25/64 HSS job bit like this handle steel and not just wood?
High speed steel is the general purpose metalworking grade, so the 25/64 HSSBG2564E will drill mild steel, aluminum, brass and wood with the right speed and cutting fluid. It is sold as an MRO job bit for maintenance drilling, which is the work electricians and maintenance crews do on enclosures, strut and panel steel. For masonry or concrete you need a carbide-tipped hammer bit instead, not HSS.
2) Is the black and gold finish on this Metallics bit just cosmetic, or does it tell me something about the bit?
Black and gold on the HSSBG2564E describes the surface treatment of the high speed steel bit, a black oxide body with a bronze-tint flute finish. It is the standard MRO job-bit designation Metallics uses, not a coating upgrade like titanium nitride. If you need a TiN or cobalt bit for harder alloys, that is a different bit entirely.
