1) What conductor size does the Blackburn OC 22 hotline stirrup take?
The OC 22 is a 4-2 range stirrup, so it compresses onto main conductor sizes 4 through 2. The bail itself is a #2 copper bail, and the connector body measures 1-7/8 inch in width. One conductor per connector.
2) Is the OC 22 stirrup a compression fit or a bolted connector?
Compression. The OC 22 aluminum body is crimped onto the run conductor with a compression tool and die; there is no bolt or set screw to retighten later.
3) Can I use this stirrup on an overhead outdoor line, and will the copper bail corrode against the aluminum body?
It is rated for outdoor use, and the bimetallic joint is what the Antirot construction addresses: the body is aluminum, the bail is copper, and the bail is tin plated so the copper is not in bare contact with the aluminum. Temperature rating is 90 C.
4) Is the Blackburn OC 22 insulated, or do I need to cover it after installation?
There is no insulation on the OC 22 at all, body or bail. It is a bare connector, which is the point of a hotline stirrup: the bail has to stay exposed so a hot line clamp can grab it. If your application needs covering, that is a separate cover or tape.
5) Why use a hotline stirrup instead of clamping directly onto the main conductor?
A stirrup gives you a sacrificial connection point. The OC 22 is compressed once onto the run conductor, and every subsequent hot line clamp connection is made to its tin plated #2 copper bail instead of to the main line, so repeated clamping wears the bail rather than damaging or nicking the conductor. Clamping directly on the main is what leads to strand damage over time.
6) Will the OC 22 bail accept a standard hot line clamp?
The bail is #2 copper, tin plated, so it suits hot line clamps sized for a #2 conductor. Check the clamp's conductor range covers #2 before you send it up.
7) Does the OC 22 come in a box or is it sold as a single piece?
Sold each, one connector per unit, under manufacturer part number OC 22. Order the quantity of stirrups you need for the job; there is no fixed carton count to buy into.
