1) What wire sizes does the Blackburn PTM 500 TN pin terminal accept?
The PTM 500 TN takes aluminum conductor from 447 to 600 kcmil, in either compact or stranded construction. That covers the usual 500 kcmil AL feeder sizes, so if your cable is smaller than 447 kcmil you need a different pin size in the series.
2) Why would I use a pin terminal instead of just landing aluminum cable directly in the breaker lug?
A pin terminal converts a large aluminum conductor into a solid copper pin so it can land in a lug or breaker terminal that is too small, or that is only rated for copper. The PTM 500 TN gives you a 5 inch tin-plated copper pin on the end of a 447 to 600 kcmil aluminum barrel, which is the normal way to feed large AL cable into a smaller copper-only termination.
3) Is the Blackburn PTM 500 TN a crimp or a set-screw connector?
Compression only. The PTM 500 TN barrel is crimped onto the conductor with a hydraulic compression tool and the correct die for the size, so there are no set screws to torque and it cannot be reused once crimped.
4) Does the PTM 500 TN pin terminal come insulated?
No insulation on it. The PTM 500 TN ships bare, so the crimped barrel and the exposed pin shank both have to be insulated or covered in the field with heat shrink or tape per your installation requirements.
5) Will a 5 inch pin fit in my panel or transformer termination?
The pin length on the PTM 500 TN is 5 inches, which is long enough to reach through deep lug bodies and stacked terminations but also needs that much straight-line room inside the enclosure. Check your available depth behind the lug before ordering, since a shorter pin version is the alternative if the 5 inch shank will not fit the cabinet.
6) Why is the copper pin tin-plated on this Blackburn terminal?
Tin plating on the copper pin keeps the contact surface from oxidizing and is what allows the aluminum barrel and copper pin assembly to be used at aluminum-to-copper transitions. Surface finish on the PTM 500 TN is tin-plated throughout.
