Bobrick 49916 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Bobrick B-49916 swing up grab bar ADA compliant?
Yes, the B-49916 is listed as ADA compliant, and the 1-1/4 inch tube diameter is within the gripping surface range ADA sets for grab bars. For a full compliant installation you still control the mounting height and clearance behind the bar at the wall.
2) When should I use a swing up grab bar instead of a fixed straight grab bar?
A swing-up bar earns its place where the wall next to the fixture has to stay clear part of the time, such as a toilet that is approached from the side by a wheelchair or a transfer that needs an open path. The B-49916 is raised by hand to vertical against the wall and stays up until it is pulled back down to horizontal for support. If the bar can simply live in one position all the time, a fixed straight bar is less hardware and nothing to operate.
3) Is the Bobrick B-49916 grab bar warm to the touch, and is the coating cleanable for healthcare use?
The tubing is zinc-plated steel under a white vinyl coating that is antibacterial and warm-to-the-touch. That matters in behavioral health, senior living and patient bathrooms where a bare stainless bar feels cold and where surfaces get wiped down on a schedule.
4) Will the B-49916 match the other grab bars in my building if they are stainless?
No, it will not visually match stainless. The B-49916 is finished in white vinyl over zinc-plated tubing, so it reads as a white bar. If the rest of your openings are satin stainless, either accept the contrast or standardize the room on the vinyl-coated look. The 1-1/4 inch diameter does match the usual commercial grab bar grip size, so it feels the same in the hand.
