Bobrick 5191 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How far does the Bobrick 5191 shower seat stick out from the wall when folded down?
Seat projection is 15-13/16 inches (400mm) from the wall in the down position, and the seat is 18 inches (455mm) wide. The feature list also gives the seat panel as 18 inches W x 14-7/16 inches D. For a compact shower or a dressing alcove, budget the full 15-13/16 inches of clear floor in front of the wall line when the seat is deployed; folded up it stays tight to the wall.
2) Is the Bobrick B-5191 ADA compliant for a barrier-free shower?
Bobrick lists the B-5191 as ADA compliant. Mounting height and the position relative to the grab bars and controls are still on the installer, and local building codes govern, so set it per the drawing for the opening you're outfitting.
3) Does this shower seat surface mount, or does it need to go into the wall framing?
The B-5191 is surface mounted, so the stainless mounting bracket fastens to the finished wall face, no recessing or wall cutting. Because the load path runs straight into that wall, it needs solid backing behind the tile or panel. Plan the blocking before the wall is closed up on new construction.
4) Will a phenolic shower seat hold up in a high-traffic hotel or dorm shower?
The seat panel is 5/16 inch (8mm) thick solid phenolic, ivory colored, which is water resistant and doesn't absorb or delaminate the way a laminated wood panel does. The frame and mounting bracket are type 304 stainless steel. That combination is what gets specified for wet, heavily used washrooms in hospitality, multi-family, and institutional work.
5) Does the Bobrick 5191 seat lock in the down position, or does it fold up on its own?
It has a self-locking mechanism, so the seat holds its position rather than depending on the user to hold it down. It folds back up against the wall to clear the shower or dressing area when it isn't in use.
6) Is the B-5191 meant for inside the shower or for the dressing area outside it?
Bobrick calls it a folding shower dressing area seat, and the materials suit either spot: water-resistant solid phenolic on a 304 stainless frame. The compact 18 inch width and 15-13/16 inch projection is what makes it work in a tight dressing alcove where a full-size shower seat would block the space.
