Bobrick 5193 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Bobrick B-5193 a surface mount seat, or does it need to go in before the tile?
Surface mount. The B-5193 mounts to the finished wall face through its stainless steel bracket, so it goes on after tile and can be added to an existing shower without opening the wall. That is what makes it a practical retrofit for a unit that has to be brought up to an accessible layout. What you do need behind that finished surface is real backing, since all of the 500 lb load transfers into the anchors.
2) Will a phenolic shower seat hold up in a high-use commercial shower, or should I get an all-stainless one?
The B-5193's seat is 5/16 inch (8mm) solid phenolic in ivory, with a type 304 stainless steel frame and bracket. Solid phenolic is water resistant through its thickness rather than surface-coated, so it does not delaminate or rot the way a laminated or wood-slat seat does in constant wet use, and it stays warmer to sit on than bare stainless. The 304 frame is the part carrying the load and taking the chemical exposure from cleaning. For a dorm, gym, hotel, or multi-family shower turned over daily, that combination is the normal commercial spec.
3) What size is the seat surface itself on the Bobrick B-5193?
Overall the B-5193 measures 25-1/2 inches W x 13-3/4 inches L x 15-13/16 inches D. The 13-3/4 inch dimension is the front-to-back depth of the seating surface, which is what determines whether a user has enough seat under them for a stable transfer from a wheelchair. Combined with the 25-1/2 inch width it is a compact seat, so in a large roll-in shower where a user needs a longer transfer surface, look at a deeper or L-shaped model instead.
4) Can I standardize the Bobrick B-5193 across every accessible shower in my building?
It is a reasonable fleet standard for compact stalls. The B-5193 ships as a single model with no finish or size options to track, so reordering is one part number building-wide and maintenance stocks one spare. Where it stops working is stall geometry: each opening needs 25-1/2 inches of clear mounting wall, backing capable of carrying the 500 lb rating, and 15-13/16 inches of clear swing when the seat is down. Openings that fail any of those need a different seat, not a different install.
5) What is the difference between a shower seat and a dressing area seat, and can the B-5193 do both?
Same part, two uses. The B-5193 is sold as a folding shower / dressing area seat, which is why the phenolic and 304 stainless build matters: it takes the wet duty in the stall, and it also works mounted outside the shower in a locker room or changing bay where someone needs to sit to dress. Folded flat against the wall it clears the circulation path in either location. If the seat will only ever be dry-side, you are still buying wet-rated material, but there is no penalty for it.
