Metallics JBLS32G – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pilot hole and socket do I need for a 1/2 inch hex lag bolt?
The hex head measures 0.725 to 0.750 inch across the flats, so a 3/4 inch socket or wrench drives it. Shank outside diameter runs 0.482 to 0.515 inch, which is what your pilot hole has to clear in the top member; the gimlet point lets the spaced threads cut their own way into the base material below.
2) Do these lag bolts meet a dimensional spec I can put on a submittal?
Dimensions conform to ASME B18.2.1-1996, the standard for square and hex bolts and screws, and the material is called out to AISI 1006 to 1022. The part is also flagged ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant, which is what a government, school, or healthcare procurement package usually wants documented.
3) Can I use these galvanized lag bolts outdoors or in a damp location?
Yes. The galvanized finish on these 1/2 x 4 lag bolts is specified for use in corrosive environments, so exterior framing, damp mechanical rooms, and coastal or wash-down areas are the intended use. For interior dry work a plain or zinc lag would do the same job, but there is no penalty to running galvanized throughout.
4) Is a lag bolt the right choice here, or do I need a through bolt?
A lag bolt threads into solid material and is driven from one side only, so it is the pick when you cannot reach the back of the member, such as fastening strut, conduit racks, or equipment feet to wood blocking or a timber. If both faces are accessible and you want a nut and washer behind, use a hex machine bolt instead. This one is a full-bodied bolt with spaced threads and a gimlet point, which is the lag configuration.
5) What is the tensile strength and hardness of these Metallics lag bolts?
Rated at 60,000 psi minimum tensile with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel. That puts them in the standard commercial lag range, not a high strength alloy, so if your drawing calls for a Grade 5 or Grade 8 fastener these are not a substitute.
6) Can I get this Metallics lag bolt in other lengths or larger quantities?
Other sizes and quantities in the BLS and JBLS lag bolt series are available by request. The JBLS32G itself is fixed at 1/2 x 4 inch galvanized in the 25 piece jar, so for a different diameter, length, or bulk box you are moving to a different part number in the same family.
7) Do these lag bolts come with washers?
No washers are supplied with the JBLS32G jar, which holds 25 bolts only. Lags bearing on wood or on a strut channel normally want a flat washer under the head to spread the load, so add those to the order separately.
