Metallics JCB3 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What grade are these carriage bolts, and how much load will they take?
Rated at 60,000 psi minimum tensile and 36,000 psi minimum yield, with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100. That's a low-carbon commercial bolt, right for general mounting, bracket, and strut work. It is not a high-strength fastener, so if your drawing calls out a Grade 5 or Grade 8 fastener, or a structural connection, this is not the bolt to substitute in.
2) Can I use these on a Buy American or ARRA-funded job?
No. The JCB3 carriage bolts are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded project with domestic sourcing requirements, you'll need a domestically produced carriage bolt instead.
3) What nut and thread pitch do I need for the JCB3 carriage bolt?
It's 1/4-20, right-hand thread, 20 threads per inch, so any standard 1/4-20 UNC hex nut, nylon-insert lock nut, or flange nut will run on it. Pair it with a washer on the nut side, since the mushroom head side does not take one.
4) Is a carriage bolt the right choice, or should I use a hex bolt or lag screw instead?
Use a carriage bolt like the JCB3 when you can get to both sides of the material and want a smooth, low-profile head on the finished face: the mushroom head has no wrench flats, and the square shoulder beneath it locks into the wood or sheet so you only turn the nut. If you can only reach one side, a carriage bolt will not work and you want a lag screw or a threaded anchor. If you need to hold the fastener with a wrench on the head, go to a hex head bolt.
5) Will zinc-plated carriage bolts hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
These are zinc-plated steel, which is a dry-location and light-exposure finish. It handles indoor mechanical rooms, strut mounting, and enclosure work fine. For sustained wet exposure, coastal air, treated lumber, or chemical environments, go to a stainless carriage bolt (18-8 or 316) instead, because the zinc coating will eventually give up and the base steel will rust.
6) What dimensional standard do these Metallics carriage bolts conform to?
They are built to ASME B18.5-1990, the standard for round head bolts including carriage bolts. If a submittal or spec sheet calls for ASME B18.5 round head square neck bolts, the JCB3 answers it in the 1/4-20 x 1-1/2 size.
7) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JCB3, and can I get a different size?
JCB3 ships as a jar of 100, which is also the order minimum, so you buy in full jars rather than loose pieces. The jar weighs 1057 g. Other lengths and diameters in the CB and JCB carriage bolt series, and other pack quantities, are available by request.
8) What trades actually use the JCB3 carriage bolt?
It's catalogued for electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning work: hanging strut and channel, mounting backboards and plywood, securing brackets and equipment bases where a smooth head on the exposed face matters. The 1-1/2 inch length covers typical sheet-plus-wood or bracket-plus-blocking stack-ups.
