Metallics JSHTB11 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics JSHTB11 hex tap bolt threaded all the way to the head?
Yes. A hex tap bolt is fully threaded along its length, which is why Metallics lists it for complete thread engagement applications. At 1/4-20 x 1/2 inch the shank is short enough that full threading matters, since you get engagement through the whole grip rather than losing depth to an unthreaded shoulder. Threads are right hand, 20 per inch, made to IFI-199 (2014).
2) Will these 1/4-20 stainless bolts corrode in outdoor or damp mechanical rooms?
They are 18-8 stainless steel, the standard austenitic grade used for general outdoor, damp, and washdown-adjacent work. That makes the JSHTB11 a reasonable choice for rooftop equipment, strut and channel runs in humid spaces, and anywhere a zinc-plated bolt would rust through. For heavy chloride or coastal salt spray exposure, 316 stainless is the step up; 18-8 is not that.
3) Are these stainless bolts strong enough to hang conduit and equipment supports, or do I need a grade 5 steel bolt?
The JSHTB11 is rated at 95,000 psi minimum tensile and 60,000 psi minimum yield, with hardness Rockwell B95 to C32. That covers normal electrical, plumbing, and HVAC support work: strut fittings, clamps, hangers, panel and enclosure mounting. It is not a substitute for a structural or high-strength steel bolt where a drawing calls out a specific SAE grade, because stainless of this class runs below grade 5 steel in tensile.
4) Can Metallics JSHTB11 bolts be used on a Buy American or ARRA-funded project?
No. These are sourced from multiple countries and Metallics lists them as neither Buy American compliant nor ARRA compliant. For a federally funded job carrying domestic sourcing language, you need a fastener with a documented domestic origin instead.
5) What wrench or socket size fits the head on the Metallics JSHTB11?
The hex head measures 0.425 to 0.438 inch across the flats, which is the standard 7/16 inch hex on a 1/4-20 bolt. A 7/16 socket, open end, or box wrench drives it. Head type is hex, not socket cap, so you need a wrench rather than an Allen key.
6) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JSHTB11 and can I buy fewer?
They ship as a jar of 100, and the jar is the minimum order unit, so 100 pieces is the smallest quantity. Net weight of the jar is 558 g. Metallics offers other sizes and quantities in this HTB, JHTB, and JSHTB tap bolt family on request.
7) Do I need a nut with these hex tap bolts, or do they thread into a tapped hole?
Either works. A tap bolt is fully threaded, so it drives straight into a tapped hole or a threaded strut nut without needing a separate nut, which is the usual electrical and HVAC use. If you are bolting through an unthreaded hole you will need to supply your own 1/4-20 hex nut and washers; the jar contains bolts only.
8) Are these right hand thread, and will they match standard 1/4-20 hardware already on site?
Right hand thread, 20 threads per inch, cut to IFI-199 (2014). That is the standard coarse 1/4-20 UNC pitch, so they interchange with any 1/4-20 nut, strut fitting, or tapped hole already in the building. No left hand or metric variant in this item.
