At 2-1/2 inches of overall length, the CB5M handles a combined material thickness of roughly 2 inches once you allow for the nut and washer on the back side. For thicker assemblies Metallics builds the CB and JCB series in other lengths on request.
2) Is the Metallics CB5M stainless or plated steel, and can I use it outdoors?
Steel with a zinc finish, not stainless. Zinc plating is fine for dry interior work and covered locations, but in wet, coastal, or chemically aggressive exposure a zinc bolt will corrode. Specify a stainless carriage bolt for those openings instead.
3) What strength grade is this carriage bolt, and is it strong enough for structural framing?
The CB5M is a low-carbon grade bolt, 60,000 psi minimum tensile and 36,000 psi minimum yield, hardness Rockwell B70 to B100. That covers general strut, blocking, equipment mounting, and wood-to-wood fastening. Where a drawing calls out a higher-strength structural bolt, this is not the part.
