Metallics JG8HC1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread and size is the Metallics JG8HC1 hex bolt, and will it take a standard 1/4-20 nut?
It's a 1/4-20 x 3/4 inch hex bolt, so 20 threads per inch on a 1/4 inch nominal shank with a measured outside diameter of 0.2450 to 0.2500 inch. That's standard UNC coarse thread, so any 1/4-20 nut or tapped 1/4-20 hole takes it. Thread into strut nuts, channel nuts, and 1/4-20 rod couplings without an adapter.
2) Do I need a Grade 8 bolt or will a Grade 5 do the job?
Grade 8 is the answer when the joint needs more tensile capacity than a Grade 5 can carry. The JG8HC1 is Grade 8 with 150,000 psi minimum tensile and 130,000 psi minimum yield, hardened to Rockwell C33-39. For light electrical bracketry, strut, and general equipment mounting a Grade 5 is usually enough; step up to Grade 8 for vibration-heavy, high-load, automotive and fleet work. Keep in mind a Grade 8 bolt is only as good as the nut behind it, so pair it with a Grade 8 (or Grade C) nut.
3) Does the Metallics JG8HC1 bolt meet Buy American or ARRA requirements on a federal job?
No. The JG8HC1 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic-sourcing clause, this bolt will not satisfy it and you'll need a domestically produced Grade 8 fastener instead.
4) What size wrench or socket fits the head of this 1/4-20 Grade 8 hex bolt?
The hex head measures 0.428 to 0.438 inch across the flats, which is a 7/16 inch wrench or socket. Standard hex head, no washer face or flange to account for.
5) Is zinc-plated steel okay for outdoor or damp locations?
The JG8HC1 is medium carbon steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating handles indoor, dry, and lightly damp service fine, and it's standard for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work. For direct weather exposure, wet locations, or coastal and chemical environments, use hot-dip galvanized or stainless instead; a thin electro-zinc coating on a heat-treated Grade 8 will corrode over time. Also note Grade 8 fasteners should not be hot-dip galvanized after the fact, so specify the finish you need up front.
6) How many bolts come in a jar, and can I buy fewer than that?
These ship 100 pieces to a jar, and the jar is the order minimum, so 100 is the smallest quantity. A full jar weighs 694 g. Other sizes and quantities in the G8HC and JG8HC series are available by request.
7) What steel is used in these Grade 8 cap screws?
Medium carbon steel in the AISI 1021 to 1045 range, quenched and tempered to Grade 8 hardness of Rockwell C33-39. That heat treatment is what gets the 150,000 psi minimum tensile; it also means you should not weld, bend, or re-heat these bolts, since that undoes the temper.
