Metallics JCB36 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What nut and thread do I order to go with the Metallics JCB36 carriage bolt?
It is a 1/4-20 right hand thread, 20 threads per inch, so any standard 1/4-20 hex nut, nylon insert lock nut, or wing nut threads on. Nuts and washers are not part of the jar, so order them separately.
2) Is the JCB36 carriage bolt stainless or plated steel, and can I use it outdoors?
Steel with a zinc finish, not stainless. Zinc plating handles dry interior and sheltered work fine, but in persistent wet, coastal, or chemically aggressive locations it will eventually corrode. For those openings go to a stainless carriage bolt in the same 1/4-20 x 4-1/2 size.
3) Is the Metallics JCB36 carriage bolt Buy American or ARRA compliant for a federal job?
No. The JCB36 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, this jar will not satisfy it.
4) How thick a material can a 4-1/2 inch carriage bolt go through and still take a nut?
At 4-1/2 inches of overall length, the JCB36 will clamp a stack somewhat under that once you allow for the nut and washer. Practically that covers doubled 2x framing, 4x4 posts, or a strut-and-blocking sandwich. If your stack is thicker, you need a longer bolt rather than this one.
5) How strong is the Metallics JCB36 carriage bolt, and does it meet a standard?
Rated at 60,000 psi minimum tensile and 36,000 psi minimum yield, with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100. Dimensionally it is made to ASME B18.5-1990, the carriage bolt standard, so head and square dimensions match what a drawing calling out that spec expects. That strength level is general purpose fastening, not a structural high-strength bolt.
6) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JCB36, and can I buy fewer?
The JCB36 ships as a jar of 100 bolts, and one jar is the minimum. Other sizes and quantities are available by request if 100 of this length is not what the job needs.
7) Will the carriage bolt head sit flush, or does it stand proud of the surface?
A carriage bolt uses a low, rounded mushroom head, 0.563 to 0.594 inch across on the JCB36. It seats against the surface and stands slightly proud rather than countersinking, and there is no driver slot, so all tightening happens at the nut end. That smooth dome is the reason it gets used where a bolt head is exposed to traffic or hands.
8) Can I use carriage bolts to mount equipment through sheet metal or strut, or do I need a machine bolt?
The square shoulder under a carriage bolt head is meant to pull into wood and lock the bolt against rotation. Through sheet metal, strut, or an existing round hole it has nothing to bite, so you have to hold the head while you tighten. If the connection is metal to metal, a hex head machine bolt in the same 1/4-20 thread is the easier choice. The JCB36 is still commonly used on electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning work where one side is wood or blocking.
