Metallics JG8HC74 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is Grade 8 overkill, or should I step down to Grade 5 for this job?
Grade 8 is what you reach for when Grade 5 will not carry the load. The JG8HC74 is medium carbon steel, heat treated, with 150,000 psi minimum tensile and 130,000 psi minimum yield, hardness Rockwell C33-39. That is the automotive and fleet-duty tier. For general equipment mounting, conduit racks, or light structural attachment, a Grade 5 does the job at lower cost and with more ductility. Specify Grade 8 where the connection is highly loaded or vibration-critical.
2) What wrench or socket size fits these 1/4-20 Grade 8 hex bolts?
Head width across flats is 0.428 to 0.438 inch, which is a 7/16 inch wrench or socket. If you are working in a tight channel or strut run, allow for that 7/16 head plus swing room.
3) Will zinc plated Grade 8 bolts hold up outdoors or in a wet mechanical room?
These are steel with a zinc finish, which handles indoor and sheltered conditions and gives moderate protection against incidental moisture. Zinc is a sacrificial coating, not stainless, so continuous wet exposure, coastal air, or chemical washdown will eventually take it. For those openings use a stainless or hot-dip galvanized fastener instead. Note too that Grade 8 strength levels are not available in standard stainless, so if corrosion is the driver you will be trading away tensile capacity.
4) How many bolts come in a jar of the Metallics JG8HC74, and can I buy fewer?
Packaged 50 count in a jar, and 50 is the order minimum, so the jar is the smallest unit. Metallics lists other sizes and quantities in the G8HC and JG8HC family by request if 4-1/2 inch length or the 50-count jar does not suit the job.
5) Do these Metallics Grade 8 bolts come with nuts and washers?
No. The JG8HC74 jar is bolts only, 50 hex cap screws. Order 1/4-20 nuts and washers separately, and match the grade: pairing a Grade 8 bolt with a low-grade nut means the nut becomes the weak link in the joint.
6) Are the Metallics JG8HC74 bolts Buy American and ARRA compliant, and where are they made?
Metallics lists the JG8HC74 as both Buy American compliant and ARRA compliant, with country of origin China. If you are filling a federally funded spec, pull those compliance flags into your submittal package along with the Grade 8 designation.
7) What steel are Metallics G8HC Grade 8 bolts made from?
AISI 1021 through 1045 medium carbon steel, heat treated to Rockwell C33-39. That heat treatment is what produces the 150,000 psi tensile minimum. One practical consequence: do not weld or re-heat these bolts, since heat will undo the temper and drop them below Grade 8 strength.
