Metallics JBLS40 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Metallics JBLS40 1/4 x 4-1/2 lag bolt be used outdoors or in a corrosive area?
No. The JBLS40 is zinc plated steel intended for use in wood in non-corrosive environments, so keep it to dry or protected interior framing. For exterior, treated lumber, or chemically aggressive locations, step up to a hot dip galvanized or 18-8 stainless lag screw of the same 1/4 x 4-1/2 size.
2) Does this Metallics lag bolt qualify for a Buy American or ARRA funded project?
No. The JBLS40 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On federally funded work with domestic sourcing requirements you will need a domestically produced lag screw instead.
3) Do I need to drill a pilot hole for a 1/4 inch lag bolt into wood framing?
Yes. The JBLS40 is a full bodied lag bolt with spaced threads and a gimlet point, with a shank outside diameter of 0.237 to 0.260 inch. The gimlet point starts the hole but it is not self drilling at this diameter in dimensional lumber, so drill a pilot sized for the unthreaded shank and drive it with a wrench or socket on the hex head, not a screwdriver.
4) How many 1/4 x 4-1/2 lag bolts come in a jar of Metallics JBLS40?
It ships as a jar of 100 pieces, and 100 in the jar unit of measure is the order minimum. Total jar weight is 2250 g. The JBLS series is the jar-packaged version of the Metallics BLS lag bolt line.
5) What is the thread pitch on the Metallics 1/4 inch lag bolt, and is it right hand thread?
10 threads per inch, right hand. Lag threads are coarse and spaced for wood fiber, so these do not mate with a 1/4-20 nut or a tapped hole. If you need a nut on the far side, use a 1/4-20 hex bolt instead of a lag.
6) What grade of steel is the Metallics JBLS40 lag bolt, and what is its strength?
Made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100 and a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi. That is standard commercial lag screw material, suitable for hanging conduit, strut, boxes, and brackets to wood. It is not a structural high strength bolt, so do not substitute it where a drawing calls out a Grade 5 or Grade 8 fastener.
7) Is a washer included with the Metallics JBLS40 lag bolts?
No washer ships in the jar. The spec lists a washer OD figure of 0.094 inch for the fastener, but the 100 pieces in the jar are bolts only, so order flat washers separately if you are bearing on soft wood or through a slotted bracket.
8) Are these lag bolts meant for electrical and mechanical trade work specifically?
Yes, the JBLS40 is sold into the electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning trades, which is why it comes in a 100 count jar rather than a bulk box. Typical use is anchoring strut, hangers, panel backboards, and equipment brackets into wood studs, joists, and plywood.
