1) Can I use the Metallics JBLS32 1/2 x 4 lag bolt outdoors or in a damp location?
No. The JBLS32 is a zinc plated steel lag bolt intended for use in wood in non-corrosive environments. Zinc plating handles indoor and dry conditions; for exterior, coastal, or wet work you want a hot dip galvanized or 18-8 stainless lag of the same 1/2 inch by 4 inch size instead.
2) Do I need to pre-drill for a 1/2 inch lag bolt into wood?
Yes. The JBLS32 is a full bodied lag with a shank outside diameter of 0.482 to 0.515 inch and a gimlet point, with 6 threads per inch, right hand. At that body size you drill a clearance hole through the piece being fastened and a smaller pilot hole in the receiving member. Driving a 1/2 inch lag dry into solid wood without a pilot will split the member or snap the bolt.
3) Is the Metallics JBLS32 strong enough for hanging strut, pipe hangers, or equipment off wood framing?
It's a standard commercial grade lag: 60,000 psi minimum tensile, steel in the AISI 1006-1022 range, hardness Rockwell B70-B100. Metallics lists it for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work, which is exactly strut and hanger duty into wood. It is not a structural high strength bolt and it is not for masonry or concrete.
4) Does the Metallics JBLS32 meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The JBLS32 lag bolt is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your spec carries a domestic sourcing clause, this one won't clear it.
