Metallics JBLS28 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Metallics JBLS28 1/2 x 2 lag bolt be used outdoors or in a damp location?
The JBLS28 is a zinc plated steel lag bolt meant for wood in non-corrosive environments. Zinc plating handles indoor and dry conditions fine, but for coastal, chemically aggressive, or constantly wet locations you want hot dip galvanized or stainless instead.
2) What size pilot hole and socket do I need for a 1/2 inch Metallics hex lag bolt?
The bolt's shank measures 0.482 to 0.515 inch outside diameter, so a 5/16 to 3/8 inch pilot in solid wood is the usual range for the threaded portion. The hex head measures 0.725 to 0.750 inch across the flats, which is a 3/4 inch wrench or socket.
3) Is a lag bolt like this the right fastener for anchoring into concrete or masonry?
No. The JBLS28 has spaced wood threads and a gimlet point, so it only develops holding power in wood or a wood structural member. For concrete, block, or brick you need a concrete screw, wedge anchor, or a lag shield that the lag threads into.
4) Will this Metallics lag bolt satisfy a Buy American or ARRA requirement on a federal job?
No. The JBLS28 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded project with domestic sourcing language, you need a domestically produced lag bolt instead.
5) How strong is this zinc plated lag bolt, and is it hard enough for repeated service work?
Rated at 60,000 psi minimum tensile strength, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel, with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100. That is standard commercial grade lag bolt territory, fine for hanging conduit, strut, equipment supports, and brackets on wood. If the drawing calls out a graded structural bolt, this is not it.
6) How is the Metallics JBLS28 packaged, and what is the minimum I can buy?
It ships as a jar of 50, and 50 each is the order minimum. The jar runs 5.41 lbs. Other sizes and quantities in the BLS and JBLS lag bolt series are available by request.
7) What thread pitch and direction does the Metallics JBLS28 lag bolt have?
Six threads per inch, right hand. That coarse spacing is what lets it bite end grain and framing lumber, and right hand means it drives clockwise with a standard impact or ratchet.
8) What trades normally use the Metallics JBLS and BLS hex lag bolts?
They are stocked for the electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning trades, typical uses being fastening strut, hangers, panels, and equipment brackets to wood framing or blocking. The part number for the 1/2 x 2 zinc version is JBLS28.
9) Do I need a washer under the head of a 1/2 inch lag bolt?
A washer is good practice when lagging into wood, since it spreads bearing load and keeps the hex head from crushing into softwood. Washers are not included with the jar of 50, so order them separately.
