1) Can the Metallics JBLS30 1/2 x 3 lag bolt be used outdoors or in a damp location?
No. The JBLS30 is a zinc-plated steel lag bolt specified for use in wood in non-corrosive environments. Zinc plating handles dry interior and protected work, but for exterior, treated lumber, coastal or wet locations you want a hot-dip galvanized or stainless lag instead.
2) What size pilot hole and driver do I need for a 1/2 inch Metallics hex lag bolt?
Measured shank diameter runs 0.482 to 0.515 in., so a nominal 1/2 inch lag. Thread pitch is 6 threads per inch, right hand, with a gimlet point that starts itself in wood. The hex head measures 0.725 to 0.750 in. across the flats, which is a 3/4 inch socket or wrench. Drill your lead hole to roughly the root diameter of the thread in hardwood; in softwood the gimlet point will pull in with a smaller lead hole.
3) Can I use the JBLS30 lag bolt on a federally funded or Buy American job?
No. The Metallics JBLS30 is listed as not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin shown as multiple. If your specification carries a domestic sourcing clause, this jar will not satisfy it and you need a domestically produced lag.
