Metallics JBLS53 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Metallics JBLS53 1/2 x 1-1/2 lag bolt hold in wood framing, or is it meant for masonry?
Wood only. The JBLS53 is a full-bodied hex lag bolt with spaced threads and a gimlet point, made to drive into wood in non-corrosive environments. For block, brick or concrete you want a masonry anchor instead, not a lag screw on its own.
2) Is the zinc finish on these lag bolts good enough for outdoor or damp locations?
No. The JBLS53 is steel with a zinc plating, which Metallics specifies for non-corrosive environments. Exterior, treated lumber, coastal or wet duty calls for hot-dip galvanized or 18-8 stainless lags instead, since zinc plating on carbon steel will corrode in those conditions and treated-lumber chemistry attacks it faster.
3) Are the Metallics JBLS53 lag bolts Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JBLS53 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project carries domestic sourcing requirements, this is not the fastener for it.
4) What pilot hole should I drill for a 1/2 inch hex lag bolt like the JBLS53?
Size the pilot to the shank, not the thread crest. The JBLS53 measures 0.482 to 0.515 inch across the threads at 6 threads per inch, so in softwood a pilot near the unthreaded body diameter is normal practice, and hardwood takes a slightly larger pilot to avoid splitting. Thread is right hand, so it drives clockwise with a 3/4 inch hex socket range head.
5) What size wrench or socket fits the head on the Metallics JBLS53 lag bolt?
The hex head measures 0.725 to 0.750 inch across the flats, so a 3/4 inch socket or wrench is the fit. Standard hex head, no washer or driver bit needed.
6) How many lag bolts come in a jar of Metallics JBLS53, and can I buy fewer?
They ship as a jar of 50 pieces, and 50 each is the order minimum, so the jar is the smallest buy. Metallics does make other sizes and quantities in the BLS and JBLS lag bolt series available by request.
7) Do these Metallics lag bolts meet a dimensional spec I can put on a submittal?
Yes. The JBLS53 is built to ASME B18.2.1-1996 for head and thread dimensions, with material to AISI 1006-1022 and 60,000 psi minimum tensile. That is the detail a facilities or institutional submittal normally asks for on a lag screw.
8) Should I use a flat washer with a 1/2 inch hex lag bolt?
Usually yes. The hex head on the JBLS53 bears on a 0.725 to 0.750 inch footprint, which will crush into softwood or pull through sheet metal brackets under torque, so a flat washer spreads the load. Lag bolts ship bare, so order washers separately.
