Metallics JBLS50 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Metallics JBLS50 1/2 x 4-1/2 lag bolt be used outdoors or in a corrosive environment?
No. The JBLS50 is zinc plated steel and is specified for use in wood in non-corrosive environments only. Zinc plating handles indoor damp conditions and dry interiors, but for coastal exposure, treated lumber in contact with the shank, or anything chemically aggressive, go to a hot dip galvanized or 18-8 stainless lag of the same 1/2 x 4-1/2 size instead.
2) Is the JBLS50 lag bolt strong enough for hanging strut, trapeze, or unistrut off wood framing?
It is a full bodied lag with 60,000 psi minimum tensile strength and a Rockwell B70 to B100 hardness, built to ASME B18.2.1-1996 and made from AISI 1006 to 1022 steel. Metallics lists its field applications as the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades, which is exactly the overhead support work you are describing. Holding power in that use comes from embedment depth in sound wood, so the 4-1/2 inch length is what buys you the pullout resistance, not the bolt grade.
3) Will a 4-1/2 inch lag bolt work for anchoring into concrete or a steel beam?
No. The JBLS50 is a wood lag bolt with spaced threads and a gimlet point, meant to cut its own thread in wood fiber. Concrete, block, or steel needs a different anchor entirely, a wedge anchor or sleeve anchor for masonry, or a through bolt or self drilling screw for steel. Driving a lag into a masonry shield is a legacy method but requires the matching lag shield, which is a separate part.
4) Is the Metallics JBLS50 lag bolt Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No on both counts. The JBLS50 is listed as not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with a multiple country of origin. If your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, this is the wrong part number and you need a domestically produced lag.
5) What wrench or socket size fits the hex head on the Metallics JBLS50 lag bolt?
The head measures 0.725 to 0.750 inch across the flats, so a 3/4 inch socket or wrench is the fit. It is a hex head lag, driven with a wrench or impact socket rather than a screwdriver bit.
6) How many lag bolts come in a jar of Metallics JBLS50?
25 pieces per jar, and 25 each is the order minimum. The jar packaging is the reason the part number carries the J prefix in the BLS and JBLS series. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
7) Does the Metallics JBLS50 lag bolt have right hand threads, and how far will it thread in?
Right hand thread, 6 threads per inch, on a 4-1/2 inch bolt. Lag threads run most of the shank from the gimlet point up, with an unthreaded shoulder under the head, so plan on the full length less that shoulder going into the wood. Allow for the thickness of whatever you are fastening through plus any washer.
